Hi all, just after some advice. I have just obtained a second hand hands free kit for my Nokia GSM
mobil phone. It came with an aerial kit that uses the window as the aerial. Has anyone had experience with these aerials or would I be better off get a standard external aerial. Also what are some of the better types of external aerials.
Thanks for any assistance.
Karl

I don't know anything anout the window one, however i do know that my next aerial purchase (soon) will be to go back to a fibreglass unit with sprung base. I tried out the little elevated whippy models but they have shaken themselves to bits in just six months.
I have only ever used GME, though am now about to start a wider search.

A fibreglass aerial will put out a stronger signal than an on-glass mount.
However, I wonder if you really need this as GSM by it's nature(timing signal) is restricted to 35km.
Even if you had the best aerial in the world mounted at 100 feet you will still not get to 36km.
I am using a through glass dual band (900/1800mhz) GSM aerial mounted on the top left of my windscreen and am getting a reasonable signal. I have been using it for 8 months with no problems and it appears robust. About $35 and easier to mount.

I have a magnetic base aerial for my CDMA phone. Gives good reception when the phone by itself shows nothing, even when walking around. I have it on the roof.
The antenna is a 4db wire whip and the whole unit, with base and cable was $14.30 from WES Components in
Sydney.

Hi Karl
The best antenna Im familiar with is an RFI CD1795 which has a true gain of 6db and is a new design and improved from earlier models. Expect to pay up to $150
Some antenna performance claims are outrageous but RFI are fair dinkum.Gme rate there antenna at 4db.(made by ZCG).
As stated previosly GSM has a range limit of Approx 34-35km and any gain will only be within this area.
If you have the on-glass antenna it won't cost you anything to try it first.
To re use - make sure glass is squeaky clean (metho) use good double sided tape and don't place over solar tinting or demister/antenna wires in glass. keep clear of any metal where possible.
Cheers Bob L.
