Heard today that the Clairview rest area has been closed because of too much rubbish being left lying around. If true it is a shame that some people are too lazy(dirty) to clean up after themselves. We saw a caravanner at Waverly Creek rest area 2 weeks ago let their sink water run out on the ground,no bucket just a big pool of soapy water. Please fellow travellers we ALL must lift our standards or very soon the only place for a cuppa will be on the side of the road. Cheers,Snake and Josie

Tis a shame if true....for such a dangerous stretch of road, and not to have MORE areas to pull over and grab a kip.

Shutting down Waverley Ck to the hoard of travellers, and Clairview going down the same track, it doesnt leave many places for travellers.

gday guys, this is the problem us interstate drivers are having. they (RTA) seem to have the endless $ to build these new heavy vehicle inspection stations but cry poor when it comes to rest areas.i'm thinking that there is no revenue in rest areas.

as you correctly pointed out, some people (truck drivers & car/van drivers) use these areas as their personal rubbish dump. whether you drive a truck or a car when your tired you need somewhere safe to pull over & rest. surely if the RTA or whoever owns the road has a duty of care to provide these things? but like everything, no one person has to take responsibility.

Mark, in this case, it is not truck drivers at fault as they generally dont pull into these two areas.

I am amazed that Clairview has such a problem as it is off the highway somewhat and shouldnt attract too many lazy travellers....somehow it has though.

The problem might also have to do with these areas being in a very large shire with a small population....the Council may not have the time/money/desire to fully service these areas and Main Roads Dept dont seem to exist outside South East Qld. (no excuse for the rubbish though)

With such a dangerous stretch, and numerous signage warning of the dangers of driving tired along here... i am amazed that they dont reopen the area. One of the worst areas in Qld for accidents IMO.

Yes I am aware that there are many travellers who are just plain selfish and lazy when it comes to sensibly disposing of their rubbish. HOWEVER - my experience with most rest areas is that there are frequently insufficient number of bins and those that are in place are generally overflowing to the extent that they are obviously not regularly emptied.

i cant agree with you more, again it should go back to the duty of care thing.whoever owns the rest areas should be taking care of them.seeing that they (government ) spends millions of $ on tv ads telling as to STOP REVIVE SURVIVE, they're not doing much to encourage it are they?

I tend to disagree fella's. If a roadside stop has no bins or they are overflowing then you put your rubbish back in your car. Whether there are facilities available or not is irrelevant to stopping for a rest as if anyone is tired they can simply pull up most anywhere. Sure it's great to have full roadside stop facilities with toilets, bins & picknick tables but if there is nothing provided then that doesn't excuse being a pig & bleep ing behind the nearest tree, emptying the RV's sewerage out & dumping the past weeks rubbish up against an overflowing bin. Unfortunately councils are in no win situation where if they provide a roadside stop they are committed to cleaning toilets, picking up rubbish & removing graffiti with no form of revenue. A once quiet picturesque stop near home became an instant pigsty when it made it into a "Free Camping Guide". Can't blame local government for that.

Here's a new idea...
TAKE THE RUBBISH WITH YOU.

If the councils didn't need to maintain these rest areas, then there would be more of them.

I've been in parking bays and seen locals turn up and dump three or four garbage bags in or next to garbage bins, So it's not always the travellers at fault.

"what about RTA maintained roads?" If the RTA have provided a bin then use it, if they haven't or the bin is full then take it with you. Leaving rubbish on top of or beside the bin will only lead to animals spreading it every where for someone else to have to pick up. I have trouble understanding the concept of dumping rubbish. The offender obviously had room in the car to carry it there in the 1st place so why not take it to the next town?
As for the underlying question should the RTA provide regular rest stops on all main routes with facilities? I'd say ideally yes.
Cheers Craig..........

If you have the room to cart your crap in, you have the room to cart your crap out!
Why is it someone elses duty to clean up after the lazy pigs!
What do you think it costs to send a vehicle 250km up the road and back to pick up someones rubish who couldnt be bothered takeing it any further????

Snake,

There is a caravan park at Clairview so I wouldn't be surprised if the local council has shut that rest area down. There is a trend now by local authorities to stop overnight camping at rest areas within close proximity to a caravan park.

In terms of rubbish I've just returned from a 4 week tour in America and noticed all the highways we traveled on and rest areas we stopped at were absolutely spotless. Other aussies on the tour noticed the same thing. This also applied to all the towns, national parks we visited.

When I made comment to the tour director I was informed that the reason is because they have "an adopt a highway program". What happens is people or businesses adopt a section of a highway and do regular clean ups.

Also they have very heavy litter fines and have a no tolerence policy, the average fine is $1000 some were even higher. I was also advised that the fines were enforced which has had an impact.

We need to adopt a more hard line approach to these grubs who couldn't give a rats about putting rubbish in already overflowing bins, leave toilet paper all over the place etc .

If those grubs continue to do this then I wouldn't be surprised to see local authorities close rest areas for overnight stops to the detriment of other travelers.

Hi
Has "competive neutrality" raised it's head again?
THIS WAS a broadsound shire rest area.
Now under Rockhampton reg council [I think.] whose area now includes Carmilla
The cp owner has for years been trying to achieve this.
I don't know if it is the same owner but years ago he used to harass
o/n"ers , including me ,telling us you can't camp here.
At one stage an unofficial sign went up saying" NO CAMPING" I wonder who put it up .

HI
Councils are under pressure AUST WIDE by the various cp owners associations to remove any competition to their cps.
In Qld this has been FORCED on Barcaldine council by the Qld ombudsman MAKING A DECISION THAT THE COUNCIL SHOWGROUND CAMP AREA HAD TO INCREASE ITS FEES from $14 p/n powered to $20 to be "competivitly neutral "to the 2cps. Blackall coincil closed its town rest area due to the same pressure from ombudsman.
Unless we can persuade gov by letters , email etc to local councillers , mps minsters for lands , main rds , local gov etc of the valueof free/ low cost camp areas in bring business to the towns as a whole ,rather than a few greedy individuals, who seem to beliieve they have special rights, YOU WILL SEE A LOT MORE OF THIS HAPPENING

Clairview is now under the control of the Isaac regional council, which is Clermont, Moranbah, middlemount, carmilla, nebo, glenden, st Lawrence, and I think tieri as well. Bloody big shire to look after.
Don't expect it to get any better.

We went through there on the 14th july and the rest area was still being used....??

Clairview or Carmilla?

Carmilla is a much nicer spot (30 minutes north of Clairview) and a lot more popular.

I would be devastated if they closed that down.

Hi Andrew,

Its about 3-4km down the road from the servo off the highway. Beach side camping and free. Has pit toilets and 2 good size creeks with crabs (good boat ramp as well). Most spots have caravans setup for long periods but there is a nice spot for tents or campers that I know of (is still popular but no caravans).

Regards David

HI
See my other posts
The servo / cp OWNER HAS FOR YEARS BEEN TRYING TO HAVE BEACHCAMP CLOSED , on health grounds .

He was on his own, the small store & hotel knew the business they would loose for the little he might gain & opposed him at every attempt he made.
In the old coucil the local member was very pro camping & the toilets, bins etc are a result of his input.
It does not look good with the new counci, & the Qld ombudsmans support for cps
