Hi all,

Which of these options will keep dust out of the cabin or are there any other options?

1. Recirculate air in cabin with AC on or fan going. (This sounds logical)

2. Recirculate OFF (fresh air allowed to enter)with fan or Ac going to pressurize cabin to keep dust out.

To me I would have thought option 1 (seal it up), as option 2 could work except if you are following somebody or another vehicle passes you and kicks up dust.

Or option 3 could be both - Use option 2 until being passed or travelling behind another vehicle. Then revert back to option 2 when air is clear.

Sounds complex but it is simple.......

Anybody have a thought?

Option 3 for me...

Option 1 is a low pressure situation so the dust creeps in around the seals... or even is "sucked in" around the seals.

In most vehicles circulate sucks a small amount of fresh air by design, to prevent drowsiness from stale air. This should presurize the cabin but will suck dust in if moving through dust. I use recirculate and turn fan off when moving through dust cloud.

Option 3 will be best .
I also block up the through flow ventilation outlets to increase the pressure differential inside the car Vs outside.
Of course a Range Rover Classic has poor rear sealing so plenty of air flows through anyway.( let alone the escaping cats)
I met a couple with a Pajero at Arkaroola, who had a car full of dust from option 1.
I told them to see their dealer as it was known problem and also try option 3.

Usually have the fan on, with or without the air conditioner going and drawing in external air.

If approaching or driving in dusty conditions, I switch to recirculated air.

I have noticed the air conditioner is best in cold conditions.
If the windscreen starts to mist up, switching the air conditioner on, clears the mist in a very short time, even if the engine hasn't warmed up enough to supply heated air.

I do the same as Bill.
Fresh air pressurises the cabin - Recirc doesn't. Keep the windows wound up.

But I think I've stumbled on the best solution - get rid of any back door and theres nowhere for dust to get sucked in.
Our canopy is dust free and the cab is until you let the windows down.

yep Option 3 is the go, we tried fcall three as SWMBO was sure that Option 1 was the go all the time, when the dust kept building up she decided that I may be onto something with Option 2 hmmmm and guess what SHE WAS RIGHT

Hi option 2 , have been using it for years in both the Suby and the Pajero, also have taped rear flow thru vent to pressurise, also always run the fan even at higher speeds ,
as for dust from car in front , should not be in its dustand shut the vent when meeting another car,
cheers Des.

Used option 1 in my early 80 series - No dust
Tried it in my 120 Prado - Dust everywhere. You could feel it grinding in your teeth.
Swapped to Option 2 in the Prado then option 3 - Still dusty.
Sold the prado bought another 80 series and am back on option 1.

What about the canopy space in the back of our dual cab? What's the best for keeping the dust out of there? Leave a window open slightly?

Thanks

I am not sure what vehicle you have but Prado's (Standard,GX and GXL) do not come with an Air-con Filter fitted, the frame is there but you need to instal some filter medium.

Have the air pressure higher in the cabin than outside then dust can't come in, if following a vehicle producing dust and fumes turn to recirculate and drop back. From Driving tractors for years in dusty conditons.

Now use option 2 with my Disco.

But can remember back in the early 60's with a series Land Rover we used to do what Les Hiddin later did with his Land Rover full canvas top on "Bushtucker Man"

Open those magic front vents wide open, leave the back canvas down and roll up both the sides......... Surprisingly effective.

I think all the dust went straight through and didn't settle on anything.

Was a bit of a bugger when passed by a road train though.

Disco.
