The section from
Normanton to
Burketown can be very corrugated in some dry seasons - maybe other travellers can give up to date detail on this? One issue for you will be lack of fuel from
Burketown (some limited access to fuel at
Doomadgee) to
Borroloola as the roadhouses that used to exist through there have closed down.

Glad to hear that someone has stepped into the void left by Hells
Gate and
Wollogorang closing. Do you know whether it is a "local" operation or an outside commercial venture - just ask because a "local" run roadhouse closer to
Burketown, a few years back, did not last long.

We traveled the
Savannah Way 11 months ago. Hells
Gate road House was closed. However the
sign said they would supply Emergency fuel Cash only. You may also be able to
camp there.
We traveled from
Borroloola to Normington with refelling the Patrol.
Borroloola has a caravan
park which is pretty basic, having said that the Bathroom facilities were excellent. There are a couple of Servos in the town, the pumps at the
General Store were the cheapest.
We stayed at the
Heartbreak Hotel at their
camping ground. Lots of green grass but their facilities were very basic. (PS Lots of sand flies)
The road from
Heartbreak Hotel to
Roper Bar was very corrugated in parts. Where the grader had been OK. Lots of
creek crossings with varying levels and flows.
Roper Bar has only one store. We certainly did not fuel up their and not worth the small diversion off the main road.
There is about 20kms of the worst dirt road to the bitumen I have ever traveled on. The bitumen road to to
Katherine is a single strip and you may have to share it with mining trucks.
We had a great time hope you do too.
Chris

Some side trips off the
Savannah Way you might like to think about are 1)
Cobbold Gorge - can go in yourself if road not too rough or do it on a trip run by Bedrock Village CP at Mt Surprise. Ditto Undara lava Tubes. 2) Cut south from
Normanton or
Burketown or
Doomadgee to
Lawn Hill NP/Adels Grove. 3) Kingfisher
Camp - if it is still operating? Further west 4) Keep River NP - excellent.

King fisher
camp is
well worth an extended stay, beautifull lawns and great paper bark trees for shade, really great fishing and fantastic walks. Also found the fees to be extermely cheap Col

October will be geting hot (even at night) and May will be
water (some deep pariticularly the GRR). If you have A/C in the caravan with genset you will be fine in Oct.
Make sure you drop your tyre pressures to reduce the chance of blowouts including the caravan.
Camp about 10km+ away from bf' camps. I had to pay cash last year at
doomadgee.
Petrol or Diesel Pajero?
Have you a long distance fuel
tank?
