Hi Andrew
There are quite a few good free camps, about 50 klm north of Townsville.
The most popular one's seam to be Balgal Beach and Rollingstone Rest area. Unfortunately they are only 2 day stops. We stayed a few times at Balgal Beach, right on the beach, toilet block, small shop / café and bbq shelters. They are in the Camps Australia Wide book.
Regards
Neil

Hi Andrew
you could try the Big 4 at Hencamp Creek Road at Rollingstone. They have acres of room but if there is no wind the sandies are a pain. They are right on the beach. Rowes Bay has sandfly issues as well.

If you travel a bit further north there is a wonderful spot at Jourama Falls no electricity but usually has space. In townsville there is a caravan park on The Bruce Highway called Magnetic gateway that the ancestors stay at when they and the carryvan are in town. There is also one on Woolcock street behind the Mecure hotel. It is really central to everything but fairly expensive.
There is also one along Herveys range Road (about 10k west of Stockland) It should be quiet with only residential traffic during the day.

Enjoy the North!

If you really get stuck, you can have a spot on my front lawn. I'll even chuck in a free power lead!

Paluma is lovely...

You used to be able to camp at the dam (current locals will know more).

Isn't there a camp spot down near AIMS somewhere too??

(It's been 14 years after all...)

cheers

It is a bit rugged at AIMS. You can camp at Alligator Creek but there is a feral problem at night being so close to Townsville. There is camping atPaluma dam and at Crystal Creek. Both about 1/2 way to ingham. Road to Paluma is about 15k of very windy up hill driving. The road from Paluma to the dam is about 12 k of dirt. I wouldn't pull a caravan along it and the sites at the dam aren't really for caravans. The citiwater people have put bollards in. We have issues getting our CT in to some of them.
