hi, i am about to leave on a trip driving from
brisbane to
Darwin and have heard of an old quartz
mine that is used as a
swimming hole. the place was visited by a friend sometime ago now, however is described as one of the best swimming holes around...only she doesnt remember where it is. Has anyone got an idea what place she is referring to?? Or if there are any other tips on
places worth visiting along the way i would love to hear them. thanks.

There was an Iron Ore
mine between
Pine Creek NT and
Kakadu that was filled with
water and it was quite a good
camp area and also for swimming. However, the
mine has been refurbished,
water pumped out and new mining operations are taking place.
Maybe this is it?
Mary Kathleen
MIne is an old Uranium
Mine a short way out of Mt Isa.Maybe that is the place.. Who knows?

Willem,
Pine creek still has old mines filled with
water but are fenced off as they are fill of heavey metals, and some have so called radioactive waste which has also leaked into the
water, which has made
camping on old minning areas a nono. You can still see these mines as a tourist thing from a distance, but thats about it . Col

So, where ya been Kiwicol?
I should have said that I understand that that
mine is now fenced off but we used to swim there to no ill affect. But that was a long time ago.

If it was a quartz
mine then they probably were looking for good quality quartz crystal for making oscillators for radios. Rock & mineral enthusiasts may have a better idea of where you used to be able to find good quartz crystals in that area.
Rum Jungle area perhaps ?

meggsontoast,
I was wondering if this might be the place. Its near Cloncurry/MtIsa
"A popular
swimming hole, about 9m (30 ft) deep with practically no shallows, is found at Mount Frosty, which can easily be reached in dry weather. An old
limestone mine is nearby and the area is ideal for gem fossicking. "
All the best
Viv

If it was close to
Darwin,It could been the 17
miles quarry south of
Darwin, on the right hand side just before you get to Coolalinga use to be an
old quarry in the sixties seventies, now
no access to it as it is on private property

Yerrr thats the sad thing about
Darwin and environs these days. All our old favourite haunts are now fenced off. Last year on my way back south from a visit up there I decided to
camp at an old favourite about 5km east off the highway on the Fergusson River. Bugger me if it isn't fenced off now with No Entry etc Private Property signs up everywhere. Managed to find a spot under the new railway bridge on the Edith River. 'Twas nice and quiet there until a train came by at 4am....lol

Hi Willem,
The good old days before those bloody bridges over the Mary, South Alligator Rivers and the fun we use to have to get to the east Alligator’s in the dry season, those were the days, my friend,
