We are thinking of going on the gravel roads from Great Northern Highway via Shay Gap to Marble Bar and from Marble Bar to Newman has anyone been on these roads recently that can let us know what there condition is like?

No recent knowledge, but it sounds like you are asking about the Boreline Road, heading north to meet the Hwy near Pardoo. When we went, the Boreline was a well maintained gravel road, and a lovely scenic drive.Well maintained i imagine because of mining activity in the area.

I haven't been on the Marble Bar to Newman road.

As a general rule the roads in that area are fairly well maintained. There have been some heavy rain falls in the district about a month ago which may have changed things. It is always best to check with main Roads as to the present conditions. Towards the end of May this year we travelled from Marble Bar through to the Great Northern Highway at a point about 140 km South of Port Hedland, along the road that passes Hillside. We were towing a 20 foot dirt road caravan. No problems at all. Great drive, just keep the speed down so you can enjoy the scenery.
Happy camping,
Mike.

We were up there last year, towed our dual axle camper from Newman to Nullagine, about 170k of dirt. The first 80 odd was good but a lot of mining traffic, hence plenty of dust. The rest was hilly and windy with a good road surface, great views.

From Nullagine we went via Scull Springs Road to Marble Bar. We heard that the road north from Nullagine was very very rough, a 100k of it.

The way we went was a great drive, worth the detour on the Scull Springs Road, heading back to Marbel Bar from the Oakover River is all black top.

Hello - just did a section from the De Grey River, through Shay Gap and along Boreline Track to GNH. Encountered some other traffic (4wds with campers) heading north from Marble Bar races. This section was as good as you could hope for and you can drive at whatever speed takes you fancy.

De Grey had about 1 foot of water flowing over crossing.

Cheers
Greg
I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

We did the Shay Gap road from Marble Bar last June with our Trakmaster van. Beautiful scenery and roads were in good condition. A little sandy towards the GNH but should not cause any problems.

Last year there were lots of woopsy do's (dips) that sneak up quickly and plenty of rocks.
Don't expect anyone picked up the rocks or built bridges in the last 12 months.
That is the area that the trucks were washed off the crossing a month ago so probably the flood ways might be sus.
Check with Main Roads but remember that corrugations are not in their vocabulary when referring to road conditions.

Hi John S.
We travelled via those roads about a month ago and they were in good condition.
The rain may have made a bit of difference but should have dried out by now.
A good drive would be to go down the Boreline Road and Shay Gap -Muccan Road and at the junction with the Warragine Station road turn left and go down through the station and you'll meet up with the Telfer Road at the junction of the Ripon Hills Road. You should ring Warragine first to ask permission as it is a private road now.
They told us it was OK but to be careful as they were mustering at the time.
From the above junction turn left and go down towards Woodie Woodie and turn right into the Skull Springs road and then straight onto Nullangine.
Good camping beside the Oakover or you could go into Carawine Gorge.
The stretch from there to Newman is easy and well travelled.
Hope this helps and have a good trip.
Alan.

Thanks everyone for all the great info - we have just come back online after a couple of days in the Bungles. Based on all the advice we'll definitely head that way to Newman towing our Bushtracker. Special thanks to Alan for the detailed trip notes - we'll give it a go!

Cheers
John
