We've just spent a day in Port Douglas and I am astounded by the apparent number of "Resorts". Does anyone have any idea as to how many Resorts there are in Port Douglas? As a comparison does anyone know how many Resorts are inBroome?

Just curious mainly

I can do some research for you. 'Resort' in queensland can mean anything from a 'caravan resort' ala Coconuts in Cairns to 'Mirage' or 'Salt' type establishments.

The one that cracks me up is the 'day spa' I saw one once next to a 'car spa'. Wouldn't want to get them mixed up.

What did you find to do in Port Douglas for a day? I can seldom spend more than a couple of hours in the place. Maybe it's because I am not one of the 'Beautiful People'

Will do some research and let you know.

Broome.........now thats a whole different box of frogs entirely.......

Craig,

Actually, I love the place.
Resorts aside, it is not necessarily an expensive place.

What do you find to do in Port Douglas for a day?
Need more than a day mate.

Fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling, para gliding were just four charter trips we did up there. Also a good place to base oneself while visiting nearby areas.

We took a day drive through the Mossman Gorge and down to Mareeba, (Coffee Country) and back through Cairns.

Another day trip to Cooktown recording Treknotes for the Bloomfield Track on the way up.

Found the place much more exciting, yet quieter than basing ourselves in Cairns, which to us was just another big City.

I suppose living in Townsville has spoilt me. Travelling north to us is not the adventure that it is to southern folk. Agreed that the areas around Port Douglas are quite interesting, it it is the whole 'Latte' Set' that I don't fit in with. There is a little indonesian/balanise craft shop in the main street of PD that is worth a look if anyone gets there.
As for the other activities you mentioned, the only adrenaline sport that I am into at the moment is filling the fuel tank ALL the way up.

Fankly I avoid Pt Douglas like the plague these days. I lived in Mossman for 20 odd years and spent (or rather mispent) a lot of my youth in the then fishing village that Port was. Since Christopher Skase built the Mirage and the Marina things, in my view, have progressively gone south. Don't go there at all anymore.

I actually live in Broome mate and i couldnt tell you myself how many resorts are here. About another 3 going up now too. Its a joke here, overpriced and not all its cracked up to be. Nice place and nice weather but definitley over rated. Probably be taken over by Oil and Gas giants soon too, Tourism will probably just get pushed to the side.

I have to agree - I was underwhelmed by Broome on our recent visit. Waitress told us the 3 bedroom house she was sharing was $900 a week, just to get worker accommodation for the tourist season.

Good launching pad for the Kimberleys, but would I visit Broome as a destination? Nope.

Please don't tell me that. Broome was one of my favourite places in the early 90's. It was just the sheer atmosphere of the place.
But it seems that's all nostalgia now.

Many thanks for your replies. Actually we just drove into PD,had a picnic lunch, SWMBO did some retail therapy then drove back to our free camp at Mt Molloy. As far as Broome is concerned I first went there in 1963 and after several visits over the past ten years you can keep it for mine. Today we are in Cooktown where it is humid, overcast and extremely windy- not at all pleasant. Watched alargish yacht come in this afternoon running on jib only and I think the Austrian crew were very pleased to get into calmer waters. A couple of days here before heading back to the Tablelands for a few days before hitting the "Resort" trail down the coast.

Regards
