Going to Tas via the ferry in September. What is the name and phone number of the Caravan Park close to the Melbourne terminal.

Have read about this park previously but could not find the details in the archives.

Thanks
Peter

I'm guessing you're booked on a day trip on the ferry.

We did the trip last year. Drove from Adelaide to Melbourne during the day, bought fish and chips at the wharf for dinner, then drove straight on when the gates opened. Overnight in a cabin on the ferry was great. Then drove straight off and started touring Tassie at 8am.

We'd do it the same next time because it saved the hassle of accommodation in Melbourne and Devonport. I know the cabins are not cheap, but we justified the cost by not needing the other accommodation.

Yes Phil we done the same travelling from Bathurst, even to the R h s fish and chips. They where pretty good lol. Had a great sleep in the cabin. I will never ever use the seats again. Biggest plus with getting cabin you can at lest have a shower.

Thanks for your answers,

I have not driven in Melbourne for around 20 years and don't know my way around, so she who must be obeyed has decided that we will arrive and stay in a Caravan Park the night before we leave (on the following night).

I understood that there is a Caravan park around 2Ks from the Terminal, we do not have a pet.

I will have a Tom Tom 720 on board and don't have a problem with towing the van in heavy traffic or in a CBD but the Co pilot.....

There are no caravan parks that close to the ferry terminal.

Open up Google (google.com.au)
Type ""caravan parks", port melbourne" into the search box.
click on "Maps" in the top LH corner

You will get a map of Melbourne with a list of places on the LHS and tags on the map showing the location of those places. A lot of the places are not caravan parks but places that simply have "Park" in their names. In my result - "C" is Ashley Gardens where most people head for. D, H & I are also caravan parks.

Hi Peter

We chose Ashleigh Gardens as the most convenient, and it is easy to access from most approaches to Melbourne. Most of their customers are either go to or from the ferry, and they give advice and maps. Really, all you have to do is follow the stream of caravans in the morning.

For the return, we did a night crossing, so drove out of the city before stopping for breakfast.

I worked it out - go to Blogs, select places & destination, on the calendar select 1 April 2006; their are six files on Tassie, and 2 for the return journey dated 26 April. The trip to Melbourne is dated 12 Feb 2006. Hope this helps you find them. They are Word documents. I also have reviews of where we camped, but haven't put them on the Blog, although they may still be in documents on the carvaners forum.

Have a great trip.

We are also travelling in september and intended to drive from Adelaide on the day we were leaving and meet the ferry that evening. Then rest on the boat ready for our Tassie tour. Just starting to plan now with some great suggestions from the archives of this forum. When are you going Peter?

Still in the Planning Stage:
Have bought Camps 4 Pictorial and the Boiling Billy Camping guide to Tassie.

Have also printed out trip write ups from
ExplorOz. TouringOz, Caravanners Forum and Australia- Caravan/Motorome/Campers Forum.

My wife comes from Tassie, so will be visisting rellies and also have the challenge of having eldest granddaughter for the first two weeks (school Holidays) so will see the highlights of Launceston/Hobart then have to double back to see the rest in our 6 to 8 weeks trip.
