I currently have internet access via Telstra Broadband at a cost $70.00 a month. I first started on a lesser plan but it didn't take long to use up the allocated capacity, which resulted in having to pay extra at the end of the month.
I have recently retired & now need to look a bit closer at making our dollars go a bit further. I am not a big user of the internet, in fact EO is where most of my internet time is spent. ( Do I hear applause??)
I think I'm going to have to go to dial up as it seems so cheap.
It used to be slow, & from what I hear, still is. But time is not an issue with me.
Any of you blokes out there care to comment on my intention ?All comments appreciated.
I will not be able to respond to any responses tonight, as SHMBI has just given "The Look" which means I will have to finish off my stubby real quick , grab another without her knowing, & present myself at the dinner table. LOL & thanks in advance.

Barry
Why are you paying $70 month?
I am with a local ISP out here in the stix on Broadband and its costs me $35pm for 1Gig download which I seldom reach. And I spend too much time on EO!
There are even cheaper schemes around but that is normally subject to fine print...lol
Cheers

Thanks Willem, I never had to worry about the cost before, as my business paid for it & it sort of got "hid" in the total operating cost as did many other things, mobile phones, some fuel for personal use Etc, even a carton of grog now & then (advertising & promotion LOL) Now, because of retirement & an allocated pension I need to look at our real living costs, & adjust our needs to what we can afford etc.
I don't mind admitting that I am a dinosaur in regard to internet/ computers in general so It's input like you have just provided that sort of points me in the right direction. Many thanks.
My wife is now actuallty glaring very hard at me, so I will log off & look forward to reading yours & other responses in the morning. Thanks & cheers.

First mistake is not to run when you hear Telstra. Dictionary meaning (thief) (In gest) :-)
I pay $49 a month for 1500K connection with 10gb download and they are not the cheapest around but I am happy with the service and have voip with them as
well for no extra cost.

Yes
well, if you have been using broadband you will be very disappointed in the speed of dial up.
I spent a little while with a friend today who reckoned his dial up had slowed down even more. Windows was downloading some updates of about 20 megebytes all up. Thats was going to slow things down for ages during the download.
There are some reasonable deals for broadband ADSL for around $39.00 per month and some better deals if you bundle your home phone and internet etc.

Don't get dial up, it is becoming obsolete because more and more web sites use Flash animation and have a lot more content.
Dial up is becoming to slow.
Get ADSL as a minimum, ADSL2 would be better.
Have a look at the " Whirlpool Forum", we use Internode and it is good to see the CEO of Internode Simon Hackett post and reply on the Internode part of the
forum.

Hi Barry, I use Adam internet, and get 20gig ADSL for $49 a month.
If you live in the capital cities, there are some company's doing wireless, have a couple of Friends and my Daughter who use it.
She pays $15 a month for 1gig download or $25 for 2gig, plus $5 a month to pay for the modem, until she has paid for it.
Many or most are cheaper than the dominating Telstra, wouldnt use them for anything, only we live in the country and have no choice with some service.
Cheers Pesty

If you live in the City or large towns then Broadband is cheap.
But out in the sticks, sometimes the only option is Telstra Wireless Broadband.
My plan was $49.95 for 1 Gb each month which I regularly went over so now I am on a plan, 3GB for $103.90 a month.
Worked okay in
my home in Far North South Australia . Now works okay at my new address on the Savannah highway. Works when we are travelling too.
cheers Eric

I'm with Adam Internet as
well. ADSL, 5 gig for $39.95 a month. My kids often go over the allowance but it just gets shaped back to 256K and you don't pay any extra. I think they are really good and their help desk is fantastic.

Hi Barry,
Could I suggest
Exetel.l
They have good plans, but very little hand holding support.
Which if you have some computer know, why pay for something you don't need.
Check out their plans, Plus if you go over your usage it cost $3 per GB.
Plans.
For EG; TELH plan 1500/256 costs $40 and you get 2GB between 12 luch time till 12 midnight.
And 48GB between 12 midnight and 12 lunch time.
You can change plan with the same speed at no additional cost as many times as it suits you.
I've been with them for over three years now and can't fault them, even though others have had dramas.
Another site to help find the right plan for you is
whirlpool
Enter you phone number and go from there, choose how much/what line speed and so
forth.
Hope this helps and confuses you.

Hi, you mentioned retiring??, once you get your pension card you can have Tadaust Broadband for $30.00 a month with 12 gig useage,
It is only for retired or invalid people. I have been with them for 5 years , 2 on dial up ( yes slow) and 3 on ADSL2. seems to be a trouble free service.
Cant reccomend it enough.
Cheers Des.

Barry, as others have mentioned there are plenty of better deals than big pond. In fact I think every other server offers better. For $50 per month or less you should be able to get a minimum of 5gb per month. Do some research on the servers in your area.

one thing to look for is an ISP that only charges for DOWNLOADS
Telstra take both up and down loads as part of your monthly quota
I am with iinet who only count downloads
Suggest you go to their page and look at broadband plans.
www.iinet.net.au
VOIP is another good way to save money if you make quite a few phone calls
MYNETFONE offer plans for $9.95 a month with 100 free untimed calls anywhere in Australia and after that it is 10c each.
At present you can buy a voip adapter from them for $10 with $10 of calls included.
When I go travelling I am going to use a wireless modem on the 10hr a month $34 Telstra plan as iinet dont do wireless

Hi Graham,
Got to agree about MyNetfone. I was able to at the time join them on a Whirlpool saver plan where we don't have a monthly fee. As long as we have credit all is good.
I've cut my phone bill by two thirds.
I use Voip for out going calls only and receive incoming through the Telstra network. Changed to Telstra's Home Budget plan so I pay 20 odd bucks line rental.
$30 a month is tops now for phone usage with line rental.
Where as before it would of been closer to $90.
MyNetFone has saved me heaps.
The best part is the 10 cent Local/National untimed no matter what time of the day or night. Don't have to look at the clock and see if it's after 7 pm to ring STD.
And to mobiles is 20 cents per minute.
It's saved us heaps.
Got to be happy with that, :-))))

If you have no other option than Bigpond i think the best advice would be to have no internet. :)
They are money grabbing serviceless @ssoles.
We have wireless which does away with the need for a home phone. If you double wireless with a good mobile plan you will never look back.

Hey we were on a really good plan with Internode, $45 a month for 1500kbs & 5gig (later 3) I would highly recommend them!
We moved and had no choice but to either pay $100 plus for 3g or sattelite broadband, we chose to stay with Internode and have unlimited dialiup for $25/month. Yeah it's cheap, but really realy slow - about 30kbps at best. Still we get by, can't really watch those youtube vids etc any more, and sending receiving large photos can take a while. Actually loading photos is probably the slowest. However with internode dialup I find I can leave the computer connected all night to do crucial updates (if you're with windows (I'm on a Mac) the frequent system updates will pboably be a huge nightmare with dialup for you). Back when we were with optus / telstra, their dialup had frequent time outs and drop outs, I would certainly not recommend it!
If I could go back to broadband at the speed I had and for around $50 a month I'd be there in a Jiffy!
Check out the Wirlpool broadband
forum to find a better deal for you....
