I am heading to
Cape York in 3 weeks time as a single vehicle.
1st time on the Cape also. Is it advisable or necessary to take a sat phone on this trip?
I will be taking the tele track to
the tip and back via the bypass road. I am hoping to join a convoy for the tele track section for safety ( better to get snatched out than winch).
Not planning to take any seldom used tracks or going anywhere realy isolated.
From what I have read there is quite a bit of traffic on the track.
Thanks.

Thousands drove the Telegraph track when it was far more difficult before mobile phones were even invented so no, one is not necessary. Yes there will be a couple of thousand 4by's on the Cape in 3 weeks time so I have no doubt there will be others in a similar position to you looking for company on the difficult sections. People will always assist (& you no doubt will help them)when bogged but you should have some plans in case you breakdown somewhere.
Cheers Craig............

Good to know. I am leaving
Melbourne on the 30th July and spend a week with the wife and son ( they fly up) in
Port Douglas.
The quiet before the storm...
So I leave
Port Douglas on the 9th and return on the 20th to
Port Douglas.. A quick one.
I am travelling with my Dad and cousin from Germany. I am taking my Silver Navara D40 with a tool box set up on the rear.(can't miss me)
Going up through centeral NSW and Qld to Port.
Then the Peninsula Rd to
Weipa. Then
Weipa heading east to Telegraph road(Batavia Downs) and up on the telegraph track and the bypass on the return trip.
Would like to get into the iron range if time permits(unlikely)
When do you expect to reach the cape?

Often communiations can be useful should you come across someone elses accident. Unless you're not sticking to the usual major tracks, you should be right, although there's been a bit of
water up there I'm told.
Just keep an eye out for mad B's who think that they can "do CY" in a week from
Melbourne or
Sydney.
