Hi all,
Just got back from a 10 day desert trip out in the Little Sandy
Desert.
Went from Newman to Jigalong, Puntawarri Track to Durba Hills
(CSR),Calvert Range to Eagle Hwy to Gunbarrel Hwy to Wiluna. 3200 kms
all up, averaged 14.5l/100kms.
Four vehicles on the trip- My Landrover D2, a 6.5 Chev V8 diesel Range Rover,
100 series and Troop Carier. Five flats on the trip, 3 on the Troopy
with split rims, one of my MTR's and one of the Coopers on the 100
Series.
I also had my air bag's start leaking. First off the LH side which I
replaced with a spare I was carrying. Six days latter the RH side
started going down over night. Did the rest of the trip ok with it.
It would only start going down when I climbed up into the rooftop
tent at night.
Also broke the arm of the LH ride height sensor. Ran over a branch
which flicked up under the car and punch a hole straight through the
mud flap and snaped the plastic end of the lower arm off. Only notice
when the car started topping out on the shock with the left side of
the car lifted to it's max height setting. I repaired the arm with
some super glue and reenforced it with 3 cable ties and some duck tape
( 20 min and back on the road).

Past two vehicles on the Puntawarri Track towing trailers with quad bikes. They had come from the Eagle Hwy-Calvert Range the week before. They had a lot of trouble finding the track from Ngarinarri Clay pan to Mt Madley to Birill Rock hole. They must of bashed a new track for most of that section. You could see were they had been criss-crossing the Desert buy the wider tracks their trailers left behind. Going west to east was much easier for us to navigate the older tracks with Ozi explorer running on the laptop, basicly just following the track to each rockhole or native well.
Aparently the Rangers were out at the Calvert Ranges checking permits the week before we got there. We had all the permits but did not see anyone out there. Had a nice refreshing swim at Yowyungoo Gorge at Constance headland, water was about 8 DegC.
We were going to go down to Empress Spring but cut back to Wiluna when my second air spring started leaking(did a minor repair with some superglue to slow the leak down). The 40 kms of the David Carnegie Road we did do was in excellent condition with a bit of water and plenty of camels. We were lucky this year with great weather and no rain. The easterlys have just started blowing again back home here in Karratha.

Regards
Glen.

Glen

You must have come across Mick O with the quads as he was heading that way.

Very soon there will be a made track between the Calverts and Eagle Hwy. We had a bit of trouble find any tracks in 06 when we went east/west and basically made our own track to Birrill Rockhole

I am interested in the mention of Rangers. There's no National Park out there so what kind of Ranger? Maybe the Lone Ranger...lol?

Willem,
May have been Mick O, Does he have a new trailer? The Trailer I saw was different to the one the photos in his member profile. I would like to see his track plot for the Warri site to Calvert range if he saved it.
The only problem is there will be half a dozen different tracks criss crossing the desert between Ngarinarri Claypan-Mt Madley-Birill Rock Hole.
I think the Rangers were there on behalf of the Martu people checking permits as they have only just become available in the last 6 weeks or so.

I bumped into Mick O on 17th July coming out of Desert Queens Baths. He and his companions were having a ball. Love the quad bikes. He had a hell of a cut in his tyre lol. He mentioned the lone rangers as well.

Looking for adventure.

Hi Glen
Sounds like you had a good trip, apart from the mechanicals.

We crossed from the Eagle to Mungkulu Hills in May this year. Given the state of the spinifex we were the first for the season. The track from just east of Madley to the Mungkulu Hills was visible but disappeared from east of Mungkulu to the Warri site.
By the way most maps have Yowyungoo Gorge and Dabbalya Gorge the wrong way around. i am sure the rockhole you swam in was in fact Mungkulu water hole in Dabbalya Gorge. What a terrific spot that is you must agree.
I have the plt from eagle to Mungkulu if you want it? Just me your email address.

Hi Phil,
I think I must have followed your track tyre marks from Birrill Rock hole to Mt Madley. The track was easy to follow where there was spinafex but the burnt out clear sections made it harder to follow. A few times I had to get out of the car and look closely where the track went. The swim in the rock hole saved, me getting the 12v shower out. I really needed a shower 5 days later when we go to Wiluna. I payed to have one at the Hotel. I would like to get your track plot, thanks.

Glen.

Hi Glen

Happy to provide plt - please provide your email address.

Did you have any trouble getting permits for the Puntawarri?

Phil

Phil,
I never actually ask about Puntawarri Track. My main concern was just getting a permit for the Calvert Ranges. I got the $50 CSR permit and then applied for the free permit to access the Calvert Range. I probably sould have included to Puntawarri Track. I only did 10kms of the CSR (Cannings Cairn to Calvert Range turn off) so the $50 really only cover access to Sunday Well and allowed me to apply for access to the Calverts.
I have sent you a Member measage with my email Address.
