RAIN , RAIN & more mud !! Returning from The Cape on the Mt. Garnet to
Hughenden road – had 2.5” in a saucepan o/nite bush camped at
Emu Swamp Blackbraes NP .
Slalomed into Hden a bit late just to see the fuel price reduced by 5c/l as I was topping up 140 litres . wot luck!( $1.83) sure better than Bramwell Junct, @ $2.39/l
Some interesting facts:
Weipa to
the tip via OTL track up & back & inc. all side trips then back to
Coen -1200kms. over 12 day period ran at $37/day for fuel . Had the cruiser pulling the ulti c/t so not really in fuel saving mode .
Camping right next to creeks with “distilled
water” flowing past was a treat for this croweater – did not sight a croc. for the trip .
Arrived
Winton to find some dirt roads closed (
Jundah) – damn , back to the blacktop.
Cheers John

Hi Peter ,
Yes , camera is great since your help . Some good sunset shots but was overcast at
the tip .
One certainly fills a card quickly with 9 vehicles p;aying ducks up & down the OTL & CREB .
Even had a Navara over on 2
wheels in a ditch for awhile - no cracks either .
Will get photos sorted in August to send .
Cheers John

ERic
Methinks David is on holidays.
Keep getting SERVER UNAVAILABLE and that causes the double or triple postings. Been going on for a month or so now with little relief in sight :-)
Cheers

Going up in 2 weeks. How are the corrugations? Almost knee high I hear.
Any dramas to report on the track? Anything to look out for on the track? Was there much rain on the Cape?
Cheers
Marco

We avoided the PDR using the OTL both ways , however there are rough patches occasionally - just backed shockers off to zero and left tyre pressures at 26 for the whole trip .
Road into
Weipa is a pearler - 90 - 100k but slow down for oncoming .
Anne Beadell Highway SA end is far worse .
Don't count on diesel at
Jardine , ran out while fuelling our group due to high use during school hols . Ferry fee is still $88 plus $11 for trailer . Also Shell ran out at
Coen but
general store OK .
Use a
water bra crossing Nolans and just ease through slowly to avoid wheelspin in the sand and flushing your carpets . Grab Hema's Tip map - has crossing details .
Recommend Loyalty Beach campground & Seisha for charter fishing .
Elim beach for a top
beach camp see Eddie & Hopevale store for fresh s/mkt. goods at a great price - pick up Elim permit at servo then $10/adult/night to Eddie .
The CREB was fine but not in the wet . Overcast for a week with little rain - a decent shower into Lakefield NP had us sliding .
Above all , I bet you will have a ball !
Cheers John
