G'day everyone
I just had a phone call from my s/inlaw in Pt Lincoln telling me she has just bought an 07
Liberty off road camper trailer, she paid $4300.00 for it with a fully enclosed annexe , and she says it is still in as new condition...She bought it with the intention of doing a trip up to
Cape York next year with us Borgy's....I hadn't heard of them prior to her ph call so was just wondering if anyone has one and what they are like??..capable of doing a trip from
Adelaide Via
Birdsville to
Cape York and return???
I had a bit of a look on the
Liberty website , but not really that much info on there....
Liberty Camper Trailers

as I recall they are the Made in China campers... but I can't find the reference that makes me think that.
Of course I can't see what difference that would make wrt the trip proposed.

Nup - not today from what I understand. 100% MiC... I've not done an assessment of the quality. No doubt it depends on their design and QA.

Hi there Vivid, so even the trailers now are made in China ???? I know made my trailer was made in SA at the time (2 years ago) The top was definately from China (parts of the box were also still in the trailer when I got it) I'n no welder by any means but I could have welded it better myself (I Think lol) It had bloody weld splatter every where, the welds seams inconsistant, looked like a dogs hind leg. As said never again !!!!!!!!!!! Regards Steve M

If you click on there photo gallery you can see a lot of pretty pics of the tent and annex. Just none of
suspension, hitches, the types of kitchens or basically any thing useful.

Goodaye All, They are made in China and are a bolt together design. I have one and haven't had any problems but I do carry a few spare bolts with me just in case. It would also pay the seal loosen off the sides and install some dust sealing as they don't have any ex factory.

G'Day Borgy,
No never lived in
Whyalla allways lived in
Sydney unfortunately. I haven't taken the trailer anywhere to rough but I wouldn't hesitate towing it. Another thing I would do is change the hitch to a tregg/trigg type as the 50mm standard tow ball hitch is a big no no as it will take the truck over with the trailer if the trailer flips at speed which happens quite regularly up at the cape. I previously owned a All Terrain which I towed all over Australia bhind my 3L Series 2 GU Manual including desert crossings etc which I had to sell when I bought a bigger house. I would have much preferred another one of them as they are unbreakable but the $$$ I just didn't have. The
Liberty Trailers are 1/2 the weight but with care and regular checks it should be all right. The old saying applies you get what you pay for!!!

Gday,
A mate of
mine drove from
Alice Springs to
Adelaide to pick up his new
Liberty camper. When he got there he was very disapointed in the whole thing....very cheaply built and crap service, and he left without it.
I wouldnt tow anything were you are proposing that wasnt very robust, and from what I hear, they arent.
Yes it could make it if you take it real easy, but would I?...No
Not without really going over it and possibly strengthening a few things first anyway.
Cheers

Sent you a private email Borgy. Too long to put on here. Yes I have owned one, never again. In 12 months was R.S from rust and fell apart on second use. I was warned on here about them but unfortunately I had already purchased it. Lost $1600 but was worth it. Like they say you lend some one $20 and you never see them again was the best $20 you have spent. Regards Steve M

Borgy
You can get a glimpse of a leaf spring in one of the photo's but it doesn't appear to have any kitchen.
Tell your SIL (or her hubby) to check
the springs, saddle plates and U bolts and if in doubt upgrade them to 12mm or 16mm plates and heavy u bolts. Use either nylex lock nuts or dual nuts to lock the u bolts. You will know why when you hit the corrugations on the development road. Check tightness every day before you start and it should be fine.

Hi Borgy,
I bought 1 a couple of years ago, the "on-road" version, trailers are locally made (were then) and the canvas was imported. The "off-road was a shallower walled trailer with the same canvas top. Kitchens etc weren't available, I made my own slide out one. They don't/didn't offer any extras at all, different hitches, whell packages, etc.
The off-road had double eye leaf springs and the on-road had slipper springs. The off-road appeared to have a heavier chassis and
suspension but I can't remember the sizes.
If they are still there, the alleged head office was at Reynella opposite the bus interchange, you could have a look at them there, it is where I purchased
mine.
I have had no problems with
mine but I don't think it would handle anything too rough without something happening to it. I/we bought it due to the budget cost - just over 5K for 12' tent.
Shane

G'day everyone
Thanks for all the replies,
well Littleborgy and myself went and checked out the
liberty campertrailers at Camperagents on Pt Wakefield road here in
Adelaide today and they actually offer 2 versions in both the offroad and onroad models, one they call a deluxe model which is a locally built trailer with the Chinese top , and the other is a cheap version with a Chinese built bolt together trailer which im afraid i wouldn't even consider buying (apologies to all that already have one) the deluxe model appeared not to bad , sounds like they have come a long way since Steve bought his, unless they now use a different builder....personally i think for the price i would rather buy a secondhand known brand name one, but if i couldn't find one then i would prob buy a
liberty , but would totally strip it down and reweld everything before i took it on any rough tracks....
Cheers.....Borgy

Hi Borgy, just trying to find pics now for you. Have them burnt to disk...........Some where ???????? You would be better to buy a plain off road trailer from a reputable person/company, then get the camper top made locally. Would possibly be cheaper and you will have better quality and build. Even if the trailer is ok if the top part is still made by the same mob in china that
mine was made by it will be very poor quality. Maybe they have improved since buying
mine ???? But the owner/manager would be enough for me to never deal with again. Hope the one your family in law have bought is ok ?? Regards Steve M

We came across one of these
Liberty Campers on the Strez during the gathering. The stub axle had just sheared clean off. There was nothing nasty that they had hit. Camper was only 5 days old. Had just had it shipped up to
Sydney and this was they're first trip. They were not very happy. Don't know how they got on.
Cheers Krakka

i think that in this instance that the price would be a good indicator...just way too cheap, for what they claim
same as a couple of others who advertise regualrly in saturdays
