There doesn't seem to be much info on "authorised"
free camp spots along the road from
Bourke to
Wilcannia via
Tilpa.
If anyone has travelled and camped that route any advice would be appreciated o good spots to stop for a night.

I've done it numerous times.
There is Gundabooka NP (off the road 30km as I recall) and Paroo Darling NP - there is a
camp on the Eastern side from memory called the Coach and Horses which has
toilets and all and overlooks the river. Grass and snakes can be long at times, but very nice. It is quite near to
Wilcannia - perhaps 100k from
Wilcannia, but on the Eastern side, not the Western.
On the Western side there are plenty of
places to get close to the river where folks have camped, but I am unsure whether it is technically allowed.
That said, a nice part of the
Darling River.
The road on the Western side from
Louth to
Tilpa has been graded in the last few weeks so if you want a quick run do that, but I think the Eastern side is nicer.
Cheers
Andrew.

Hi Andrew, Thats the problem with public land. With a full sized or poptop van, staying over night is easier and hard to prove you will be staying overnight. Its easy to pull up late and stay but a little more difficult whan you open up a
camp trailer or start banging the tent pegs in the ground.. Its fairly obviousl what your intentions are then!!! Michael

Andrew,
thanks for the details. We will have our dogs so I think the NP are out of the question.
But I'll take your advice on which road to use.
Cheers

I don't think you can travel the road without going through the NPs though... and NP have some 1080 laid signs out too...
There are a few stations with camping along the road, but mostly on the Western side - one on the East as I recall.
Cheers
Andrew.

Yuo can
camp at
Tilpa Weir, about 5-10 klms from
Tilpa. Call in at the pub and the could proably assist. I also think there is a couple of farmstay
places along the road
Louth /
Tilpa road.

Just got
home a couple of days ago from that very trip.
Bourke to
Wilcannia to
Menindee to
Wentworth. We travelled on the east side from
Bourke to
Wilcannia then the west side to
Menindee.
Good camping at
Louth just over the
bridge from the pub. As mentioned earlier there is camping at the weir just before
Tilpa. A kilometre or so after
Tilpa there is camping available on Old Buckanbe Station, we payed $15 the night for two people with access to power and hot showers at the old shearers quarters. Just pull in and set up, Herb will get around and catch up with you for your fee and will insist on issuing an official receipt.
Coach and Horses
Camping Area is quite nice but I reckon the NPWLS are a bit steep with their fees. $7.00 to drive in then another three dollars ahead to
camp, and for that you get a long drop
toilet and access to a gas barbecue.
There are many
places where its possible to
free camp along the river, just watch for where the tree line comes close to the road (or vice versa), with wheel tracks leading off the road to the right.
A couple of properties had the “No Camping – No Fishing – No Shooting – No Farting” signs, but were defiantly in the minority.
Give it a go! We really enjoyed the experience.

We had absolutly no problems roadwise, next to no bulldust and a few sections a bit rutted from previous rain. Left
Bourke Wed. 16th. and arrived
Wentworth Monday 21st. I rained the night of the 20th. which gave us a bit of a slippery drive down from
Menindee. I can't comment on road conditions after that date.

Fuel at
Wilcannia last week!
Shell Servo in main drag - Diesel @ $2.179ltr
BP Depot in backstreet - Diesel @ $2.059ltr
Untill someone can convince me otherwise I reckon that
Wilcannia has an unfair reputation from the point of view that I found it no worse than
Bourke and probably better than Brewarinna.

I was thikng the same thing; we've stopped there previously and never had problem.
I've often wondered whether peole have actually encountered problems or is it simply a reputation thing??

I just had an aftermarket long range tank fitted so I can avoid the more expensive fuel stops like
Wilcannia.
Then again Diesel is expensive everywhere I suppose.
