What are the thoughts out there when comparing the 2 units for use in the far country areas?

We used the 600 last year when going from WA to Cape York and back thru the centre and it was great , it had every track (via the card supplied) and did the job very well.

I now have the Tomtom for business use in the city, but havent used it in outback areas.

Will the maps from the 600 go into the TomTom?

The Tomtom 720 may show the road you are on out in the country, but the chances are, it will not give any other detail.

I have a 720 and love it for metropolitan areas, larger country towns
and some country locations, but it does not give the detail that my PDA running OziExplorer and NatMap does.

The maps from the 600 are unique to the Magellan and will not run on Tomtom, to the best of my knowledge.

Hello - Magellan maps will not work with any other make. Suspect the Tom Tom will not have as much detail for "outback" areas except main roads. Have a look yourself.

Cheers

We use both a 600 and a tom tom, continously amazed of the tracks that the tom tom does have on it around the brindebellas and great dividing range, but you won't beat the 600 for detail and the ability to "look" ahead on the map to trace out tracks before driving them (if you have the topo sd card that is)

I left the TomTom running when I was in the high country just south of Kosciusko and the Murray and I was amazed at the tracks it named. However it is no substitute for proper mapping software
