Hello again,
I want to ask a question about
suspension on a '99 T/D Jackaroo.
After our
Simpson desert trip ealier this month the Jackaroo developed an exhaust leak.
Had a look under it yesterday and found the flexible joint just down from the engine pipe was squashed and out of shape.
Popped along to my local exhaust repairers and had the piece replaced.
Apparently on the trip along one of the long gibber plains roads a big rock has hit the engine pipe and bent it back squashing the joint.
As owners of the T/D Jack manuals know the transfer case hangs down very low and therefor so does the exhaust, we bottomed out quite a few times.
This is a long winded way of asking , what
suspension lifts have you fitted.
Bearing in mind this vehicle is our daily ride, I am after info on what you have used to gain some lift without adversly affecting its ride characteristics.
I am sure and I think my wife would agree that 2" would be good.(lol)

Basically Willam you need to get the chassis and diffs higher off the ground and the only way to do that is put larger tyres on and to do that you need a
suspension lift Two inch rear spring up grade and wind up the torsion bars and then you can put a set of 265/75 x 16s on. Not legal for your vehicle but it gets the transfer two inches higher off the ground.
How do I know we own two Isuzus and the Wizard has the same chassis and t/c as yours and the 265/75x16 gets her off the deck nicely.

Thanks Bruce,
I would like to keep it all legal if I can.
I might have to look at tyre sizes next time around.
I went for 245/70/16 this time, thinking they would be better on the sand.
What I didnt factor in was the driving along gibber plains getting to and from
the desert.

Will,
You are limited as you have the torsion bar front. You can wind them up a bit, or have the bars replaced with tougher ones, but in doing so your CV joints will wear.
At the back is no problem with a range of replacement coils.
The Achilles heel of the Jack is the transfer case and front ground clearance - accept it with the rest of the package

G'day CJ,
Your right about the transfer case.
I think looking back in hindsight that the majority of problems re: bottoming out came about after caming across
water channels and the shocks being a bit soft and allowing too much bounce.
I think next time I travell out there I will have to have a look at the whole package in regard to shocks, suspesion lift and tyres.
I dont think I will need a lot of extra clearance, I was also carrying a lot of weight at the front of the roof rack.

Have had my Jack lifted. (
mine is the petrol version)
50mm front and rear, with 40mm adjustable shocks.
Retained the standard torsion bars in front and added a pair of Polyairs to assist when towing the camper.
All up a good improvement over the standard setup.
Have not increased the diameter of the
wheels.

Hi Bill,
You have no problems just using the standard torsion bars at the front?
It would certainly be cheaper just to retain the original.
Did you replace the rear springs to get the extra lift?

The installer advised that the standard torsion bars were suitable for a 50mm lift.
Yes, replaced the rear coils with longer ones, then four new 41mm diameter shocks to improve damping.
The overall result was a 50mm lift in the front and a 75mm lift at the rear.

If you go to 245/75/16 tyres it should give you a bit more clearance and still be legal.

Hi Pete,
I will certainly have to look at the tyre issue next time I'm changing them.
Have just brought some new 245/70/16 so it wont be for a while.

Hi Pete,
it is getting that way.
If I get new tyres I probably wouldnt be able to afford the diesel to go for a drive.

Big panic at the moment William, everyone wants to sell their 4by and buy a corrolla, I kid you not. I am sure exploreozers are the exception to this. Jacks have dropped 50% in value in 12 months, but I still love my v6 best vehicle I have ever owned. Just towed in
well over a ton of wood, try that in a fwd Corrolla.
Cheers Pete

Have you seen this site William B, where all things Jackaroo are discussed? There are a couple of Jack mechanics who answer all questions about Jackaroos.

Hi there. I am on there too. I have the 2 inch lift plus a second set of rims with 245 75 16. Makes a big difference off road.

The illegal MU can be overcome simply by putting airbags on the back and winding up the front .
I have kitted a 95MU with that and its great as you can modify your ride height with a compressor.
