Went to our Family Doctor the other day complaining of Intermitent
Chest Pain, had a feeling I did some damage to my Sternum,
Being on the cautious side of things, he booked me in to have a
Cardiovascular Stress Test, because I had a Three Stents put in
the old Arteries in 2005, WELL, they wire you up like an Engine
Diagnostics, you jump on the Tread Mill, and they monitor your
Heart, Blood Pressure ect, as they are doing this, the Treadie is
going faster and the incline is getting steeper, I thought I was doing
ok, I started to suck in the air and kept on going through the exercise,
then the Treadie stopped and they made me sit down straight away
and they tested my Heart Rate Recovery, Now I thought I was
reasonably fit for a 61 year old Plumber, I still do a lot of hard work
ect, I dont Jog or Walk for fitness, and I dont Smoke, I never get out of Breath, HERES THE WARNING TO MY AGE GROUP,
The Doctor took all this information and Analysed it all and said
that my Heart was under strain, I had no Symptoms or Fatigue
but if I dont start doing Cardiovascular Exercises very soon I will be
in a lot of deep sh*t, here WE ARE THINKING OF GOING ON THE BIG TRIP IN THE NEAR FUTURE, so all this can be fixed up, with
a bit of Gym work ect, no panic stations yet, So all you over 50's
and 60's take heed.
P S. The pain in my chest was a pulled Sternum.

Cheers

Bugger!

I am slightly ahead of you on the chronological scale but not by much!!!

Have a similar diagnoses by local doctor. Said me ticker was oversize.

Said "What to do?"

Doc "Take it easy"...then he gives me a pamphlet

Pamplet says "Better do some good exercises"

Yeah yeah stuff that. Walking is boring. Gym is boring. Maybe I will get under truck and fiddle around there trying to break something.

Going to pull the trailer bearings apart tomorrow. Thats exercise isn't it???

Cheers

And take it easy!

G'day Bob

Pressure 120/80
Sugar 4.4
Cholesterol 6.1

Oversize is probably the result of 35 years of chronic asthma. Asthma was miraculously cured 5 December 2007 with the presciption of a new preventative medicine

For the rest I'm just a normal overweight old bugger with chronic arthritis. Cure for arthitis pain is Eat More Chocolate!!!...lol...It works!!!

Chocholate....... ummmmm.. I confess I am a chocoholic but very very fussy. My favourite is Lindt but it is too expensive to have regularly, so next choice is Dove but I am having withdrawals as I cannot find it in the shops anymore (other than the bite size Dove balls or something, yuck). May have to try this one you suggest. But where have all the Dove blocks gone and why is there is so many new yucky varieties of Cadbury? I hate them all!! These are desperate times for lovers of good chocolate (but I don't like dark chocolate, only milk - not white). Said I was fussy.... can you still get Dove over east? If so I might have to get a comfort pack sent over from Mum!!

Hiya Michelle

Was with a client today and i think the average is a creamy (not sweet) milk chocolate..Yes they are bringing out a lot of rubbish flavors in my opinion...I don't like dark choccy either but will eat it if there is nothing else about for a fix lol..

The King Island isn't a bar but a Creme (You'll love it trust me)

I will keep an eye out for Dove to see if its still over this way !

Similar age and the only exercise I get these days is taking my small dog for a walk. I went through the treadmill test a few months ago and was told that they find most dog walkers are reasonably fit. My little fellow actually takes (drags) me around the block :-)

I'm 42 and reckon youd be fitter than me.

Dont smoke, moderate drinker, too much junk food though.
On the roof every 2nd day up and down ladders every five minutes, better start using that treadmill i bought 2 years ago!

Risk factors for heart disease and stroke are:

Family history
Smoking
High BP
High cholesterol
Diabetes
Fat gut

Thanks to Krispy Kreme, Coke and Ronald MacDonald I think I am guaranteed work for some time yet. (Thankfully smoking and smokers seem to be fewer)

Yerrrrr.but there is no hard an fast rules

Skinny people can have high cholesterol and fat people can have none.

Risk factor is just a modern day catch phrase.

In the scheme of things, no matter what you do, life is eventually terminal. If you are lucky you can go for a long time. You can be unlucky as well. Your heart is destined to beat only so many beats and then it stops. If you smoke, drink and eat fat to excess then you may shorten your lifespan.

But a cousin who was model of fitness, dropped dead at age 50. His mpother on the other hand is still alive at 89, drinks 3 bottles of scotch a week and an unkown quantity of port. She gave up smoking at 85 on doctors orders. Still she keeps on going with her lifestyle though, beating the odds at every turn...lol.

Yeah I don't reckon you need to be 50 or 60 to take note. Since having a couple of kids and thus being a home Mum I seem to have spent a lot of the past year at this computer. I'm certainly starting to wonder about my heart health and fitness, after all being skinny (I'm not skinny but I'm not fat) and being fit are two different things!
Reckon your post is a good reminder for everyone to get off their butts more often - in my case get back onto the mountain bike and get outside and run around with the kids more often!

Thanks for the reminder, it seems almost inescapable that health is always one of those things that is taken for granted until you get a wake up call. So don't let it come to that! Don't think of yourself, think of the effect it would have on the loved ones around you.

And I'm merely almost 29!

Well, if I'd have known that I was going to live to be this age, I would have taken better care of myself :))
Get off the bum and have a walk around, so that you won't say the same thing when you get to be an old megga fugly like me :))

You mean to say that you actually look like your avatar image? Lol

Hmm since there are plans in the pipe line to hit the road in retirement (50 / 60) I guess that's another consideration and good reason to take care of the most precious asset I own! But then again you have to enjoy life because you never know when the day will come and for what reason.

Moderation I suppose - food exercise, everything in moderation, then when they say bread is good for you one day & cancerous the next it won't matter as much!

Just make sure that if you go on any trips into the 'outback' that you have appropriate communications and that your wife/partner is 100% competent in driving and manoouvering your vehicle and any accompanying 'baggage' and able to navigate and negotiate their way back into 'civilisation'. Perhaps also have them become familiar with a GPS so that in the event you drop dead they can plot your position for recovery of your body. Might sound 'silly' BUT it has happened to many before and if you have any consideration for loved onbes think very seriously about the above advice. Good luck hope you have many troublefree years and miles.

And to add to that a basic first aid kit, but also the knowledge on how to use it - or at least a first aid book which would provide a quick reference!

Or better still make sure she is 100% competent in handling a shovel. Nobody wants their holiday ruined driving home with a stiff for a passenger. And nobody wants to recover a body thats been exposed to the sun and the flies for a few days.

As long as everyone agrees before the trip that if you kark it in the bush thats where your trip ends there will be no arguments etc when the moment arrives.

After all a bush burial is a lot cheaper and more environmentally friendly than a Tobin Bros extravaganza, or even a cremation.

I can see a lot of problems with such a DIY affair. The lack of a death Cert being one...plus the police might want to dig them up again anyway. Any Insurance companies would not be happy, and would you have to wait 7 years to be legally dead?
Personally I'd like to leave as few hassles behind as possible...so my friends and rellies could get on with the drinking.

I'd be happy enough with that. Gee I wish the funeral places could be by-passed, I don't fancy having to arrange a proper funeral or likewise someone else having to do it for me. Lol, attending your own funeral however is easy enough!

Hi Garry

I was on the Treadmill for about 5 minutes, they had me wired up
and I also had a Canular inserted in my arm, I had to get up to speed
and wait till my Heart Rate got to 158 beats per minute before they
started injecting this Nuclear Dye into my arm, which would show up
when I had a Scan after I got off the Treadmill,
They monitor you, while you are walking and just about jogging on
a uphill gradient, and at the same time they ask you if you have any
chest pains ect, I didnt have any problems at the time, I wasn't
gasping for air, but I was breathing fairly heavy, and you could feel your heart beating fast, when I had the scan, it showed that my
heart wasn't copeing with the extra work load, and my blood pressure was fairly high 179/110 its normally around 130/85
anyway I am booked in for some intensive Cardiac Rehab over the
next six weeks, to fix things up, I am still at a loss, because I
never get out of breath when I work hard or walk long distances,
I dont smoke and my cook watches what I eat, I put it down to
when I was a local government supervisor for 26 years, in the
early days, and just didnt do any hard work, anyway good luck
with your test.

Cheers
Daza
