Want to fit struts to tool box on camper trailer, 1200 x 1000 x 1mm thick. Read articles, still not sure how to calculate what size I need, but more when looking at the struts in auto shops, they don't say what weight they lift. Can someone give some advice please

Mary,
Had the lid on our camper storage box done a couple of months ago.
I got tied of propping the lid up.
It's not as simple as buying a couple of struts.
I went to Struts R Us and the bloke used a jig to work out the amount of travel required. Then we had to work out the type of swivel ends needed, due to the taper on the box and my desire to locate them as far to the outer edges as possible.
Got all that done, fastened the struts in their location, then the bloke gassed up the struts approximately. Tried them out and added a bit more pressure to end up about 14kgs I think.
Worked out beautifullly and the cost was around $90 all up.
Basically a strut that gives the required travel will operate withing a range of pressure and the final amount can only be applied by "triall and error".
Bill.

I got
mine from UES in
brisbane (offices in most states I think) . They supply transport body builders. Approx $15 each www.uesint.com If you tell the approx weight of lid/door they will tell size strut required.
