I am looking for good quality Velcro that is adhesive backed as the stickers I have used fail regularly and the race tape doesn't last it seems.
Where do you buy it? Is it the stuff you buy at boating shops, ships chandlers, whatever?

Gday John,
I like the genuine "Velcro" brand stuff. Buy it in boxes of hook or loop with one meter lengths at Bunnings.

Don't you hate it when you get the message "Server not available"
Bunnings first stop in Warrnambool today, but interested in Moggs suggestion. Have had plenty of hook and loop Velcro before but thing the wider the better.

John,
I've seen it in both 1" and 2" widths, but can't remember whether Bunnings had the 2". I find it sticks very
well to smooth surfaces, and can be hard to remove.
But for sticking to aluminium and plastic, I sometimes reinforce by using contact adhesive.
I also glue the Bunnings utility carpet in lots of
places instead of using loop velcro. Pretty much every accessory in my truck is held on with velcro.

Self adhesive Velcro is available in various widths & strengths so perhaps you need to get something wider to give more surface to stick
I use velcro a lot to attach things to my Achilles inflatable boat & the wider the velcro the better

There are 2 types of adhesive, one to just hold the velcro in place prior to being sewn, & one intended for semi-permanent use ..... but, any of that type of adhesive will progressively lose its grip as heat increases.

Hi John,
I use the standard Velcro Hook & Loop spots and the adhesive backing has proven to be adequate.
The original strip Velcro as supplied by Obie's lasted around 6 months on the glass, then started to lift with contraction and expansion.
This adhesive was
water proof but proved no better than the normal.
The spots don't expand or contract like the longer strip material.
I noticed during our
Innamincka trip that the original Velcro on the screen has lifted in
places, so I will replace this with the spots as
well.
One little tip. Due to
the Loop material already being attached to the screen, I had to put the Hook spots on the glass. These broke down over time with the ultraviolet rays, but was easy and cheap to replace.
When I renovate the screens I will place the Hook spots on this and the softer Loop spots on the windows. This will also be kinder to the sponge when washing the windows. The screens are not permanently out in the sun, unlike the window glass.
Bill.

G'day Bill, will be looking today in town at my options. I don't know how many times I have tried to stick
mine. It doesn't help that I bought 3mm Lexen as that was the recce of the supplier. 2mm thick enough.

Hi John, I had the same issue with the Velcro dots and strips - didn't matter which brand. I now use the 3M brand 'Dual Lock' strips and they are great. The adhesive is waterproof and heat resistant and they have small black mushroom shaped plastic stems that snap together. You can get it from Bunnings for about $9 for a pack of 4 strips. I've had it on the back of the Patrol now for over a year and they look as good as the day they went on.

Will see you early September Moggs as you know. You better come and visit after that. Cows will be calving again soon so the littlies will enjoy the babes.
Am going past bunnings today so will look for the Dual Lock strips. Up on the Development roads we had stones creeking down behind the protector, then bigger ones :-( - diesel too :-((

Hi Moggs & John,
I was going to recommend the same thing. The smaller Bunnings don't always have it (I tried once in
Mildura & that's what they told me). I've bought it at Whitworths -
Whitworths Snap Lock

Adrian

Why not just a few dots of silicone?? Very good adhesive- and no problems to scrape off when not needed !!

Hi John.
Just returned from a 3 week trip out west. I had my protector attached with velcro strips & they lasted 1 day!!.
Used silver race tape. No problems. Protector stayed in place & cleaned off the residue glue white spirits when I got home.
The velcro stickers were a waste of money in my opinion.
Cheers.
Vince

G`day John,
I used stick on velcro to hold canvas dust covers over the fridge vents on the caravan but they didn`t last very long before the velcro came unstuck from the plastic vent cover and they started to peel away.
I made a rear window protector for the
Innamincka trip from a sheet of 2mm Polycarbonate (spelling ?) and fitted it to the window by drilling holes in it to hold six 60mm dia suction cups then used another six smaller,40mm dia, suction cups in the spaces between just stuck to the window, not drilled or held to the protector, to hold the it away from the glass a bit more evenly. It didn`t move for the 4600 + K`s .
Regards,
Scrubcat.

Hi John
Their are significant specification differences in the many grades of Velcro available.
In the design of the new
Southern cross station I specified a type that has little sag when hot and under load for some small fixtures.
E.G. PS 0172 loop and matching 19mm wide PS 0172 hook
Call or visit Velcro Hallam Victoria (9703-2466) for helpful advice.
