I need new tyres on my 100 series land cruiser, have looked at BF Goodridge at's, Dunlop at3's and Mickey Thomson's, want for sand and intermediate off roadand and highway. I just need opinions before I spend the big bucks.

Hi bog steve,
Can only go by my own experience for what it's worth. Ran BFG's a few years ago with a pretty good run. Did find however, that after they get around half worn, they seemed very susceptible to stress fractures through the tread when on rocky or gibber roads. That's in spite of playing around with reduced tyre pressures etc.
Since then have had a very good run with Dick Cepek (Mickey Thompson) 265's. However, have recently put them on my camper and upgraded the 'cruiser to 285 Mickey Thompson ATZ-2's. The ATZ's feel really nice - very smooth and seem to go
well both on and off road. They look quite chunky but are really a marked improvement on the ride I had with the Dick Cepecs. I guess time will tell how they last, but so far I'm impressed.
Basically, any good LT made in the USA should give you a good run.
Cheers
Gerry

got cooper ATR 285 x 75Rx16. I do 70% black top and the rest beach and some dirt. before I had these I ran BFG's, they performed just as
well. I got the coopers cheap cause I know a tyre guy and wanted to see if they performed any better.( bit quiter on the black stuff)
It's all a load of wank man, decide how much you want to spend on a
well known brand tyre and you can't go wrong!

Bang for buck, for your requirements you would be hard pressed to find a more appropriate tyre than Bridgestone 694's.
Not so "Big Bucks".

Steve,
if you like the tread pattern of the bridgestone 694s you could try the GT radial Savero ATPlus
they are a mimic of the bridgestone, are very quiet on road, and pretty good offroad. They are also about 50-60$ less per tyre then the bridgestones.

Another vote here for Mickey Thompson ATZs. Recently fitted 285/75/16s to my 80 series and they are performing really
well so far. The MTZs are a step further towards offroading, and MTXs are a a step towards more road use and both are great too. Depends what driving you do.
You should be able to get them for around the $300 mark each and are guaranteed to last 80,000kms which is pretty good.

Guaranteed to last 80,000 !!!! Jeez, I'd like that in writing !!
I have some ATZ's ( 245/75/16's ) with only 20,000 on them and the way they are chipping and tearing ( only small ammounts of 4wding ) I will be lucky to get 50,000 out of them !!
But I'm not unhappy with them, they seem a reasonable tyre, but the way they're wearing, I can't see a long life out of them !!

It IS in writing... on their sales brochure and web site. Check it out. Good enough to argue the point if you got less kms i think! If they make sales from statements like this then their product has to live up to it! I might print it off and keep it so i have ammunition if they last far less ha ha.
Cheers.

If they come in your size then I can recommend the Cooper ATR. Have run these for at least 40,000km and they are still around 50% tread with just a few chips here and there. They are on my 2004 Turbo Diesel Prado.
These are my everyday set that are used for round town, highway trips and light off-road work. They also do very
well on sand. I have Goodyear MTR's as a second set and these are used for more serious trips but the ATRs are great as general road tyres that can take a bit of an occasional pounding on roughish gravel roads.
For your described use I reckon they would suit you nicely. They are MUCH quieter than the MTR's on bitumen and great on sand. The MTR's are so much grippier on gravel or in rock work but do skate around a bit on the bitumen (and howl). If you don't want to do too much serious 4WDing, but may do the OCCASIONAL off-roading then the ATR's are for you.
Just my experience.
Cheers

Last point - the ATR's come in both Passenger or Light Truck constructions. The LTs have another ply or two I think which makes them slightly stiffer. Have also heard the LTs seem to wear a bit better giving a slightly longer mileage.

Hey Mate, i also have a 100 Series and run Bridgestone 694's, have found them to be a great tyre and using them for the same sort of use as you describe. They are relatively cheap to buy and so far I have got 40000 out of them with about 1/3- 1/4 tread to go. I will be buying another set when the time comes.
