Would like the opinion of members on what is the most suitable fridge/freezer size for very remote travel. What size do you use when going remote for several weeks with two people.

I presently have a 70L EvaCool in the Troopy which is set up for 35L Freezer and 35L Fridge. I have friends telling me this is not enough space for an extended remote trip and I should take two of them. I do have another in the CT that I could take.

Cheers

Hi Dick ,

About to drop down for a few weeks ?

My eutectic Autofridge is 73 litres . I never use it as a freezer as I get 6 weeks life out of my cryovac meat . I would not like to go smaller for an extended trip , as I have lots of cheese , ham , vegies in there too .

Did the Canning years back with a 39L Engel as a fridge only & that is probably the smallest I'd go. Gives just enough space for a heap of cryovac meat, & the basics with 4 cans of drink & a litre of milk. We just kept topping up the drinks as we used them.
I've now moved onto a 73L Autofridge & it's as big as I'd go as anything larger just takes up too much space in the car & uses unnecessary power. The bonus with the bigger fridge is I can have far more cold drinks, 5L of water, a dozen cans, Juice & milk to keep the family of 5 going for 4 weeks plus.
So I suppose to answer your question, yes a 70L EvaCool will be plenty big enough for 2 people. Carrying 2 fridges is a luxury that goes towards overloading your car & on extended remote trips you'll have plenty of other things competing for space.
Cheers Craig..............

I tooka 50 litre EVA Kool as all freezer and an extreme esky.

I had 4 large freezer blocks and alternated them from the freezer into the esky every 24 hours. We were out and about for 9 months in the camper trailer.

I have a 32lt Engel and a 23lt Two-zone which sits on top of the Engel. I run the Engel on freeze at all times. Cryovaced meat stays good in the freezer and foodstuffs stay cold in the fridge. I have a habit switching the fridge off from about 9pm until morning as I sleep in the truck and don't want to be annoyed by a buzzing device. I can carry enough tucker for two, for two to three weeks remote travel.

As a rule I don't carry beer in the frdige but should I take a slab or two along, I would limit myself to two cans per night and then just pop them in the fridge in the morning to be cold at the end of the day.

Cheers

Hi Willem

Sounds like my 70L EvaKool should be OK then if I run it half as a Freezer and half as a Fridge. As you well know, when you leave the trailer at home, space is at a premium.

Cheers

Young Willem ,

My butcher strongly advised me not to freeze my cryovac packs as the plastic will often split . It lasts long enough without freezing anyway - 8 weeks for steaks on my last trip was pretty amazing .You can attest to the fact that the steaks were still OK !

Cheers ,

Willie .

yep,

no cracking here either, could well depend on the packing before freezing and thereafter in transit.

Willem

i have been freezing cryovac packs for years and I have never seen any crack.

The Supermarkets in Jakarta sell their Frozen Australian meat in cryovac packs and it is fine.

Cheers

I too have frozen them without a problem . The whole question came up when I asked him to have them frozen ready for pick-up and he gave me the big lecture.

I dont bother anymore though , because if they last 8 weeks in the normal fridge , why waste battery power freezing them .

We travel with a 40l Engel, family of 5 with a camper trailer. On trips where we have a long time between shops we have carried a large esky as well.

We use the fridge as a fridge and keep the esky full of frozen stuff. If we take something out of the esky we replace it with scrunched up newspaper.

The fridge stays in the car and the esky in the camper trailer where it is pretty cool even on hot desert trips.

On Cape Yorke we went 2 weeks between butcher and grocery shops. Same when we did the Simpson. We restocked all supplies in Alice and then went via Palm Valley, Kings Canyon, the Rock and then across the desert and down to Broken Hill using this set up.

Dick,

I have 2 60L Engels. 1 is a fridge/freezer combo the other is run as either fridge or freez only. This gives me plenty of options.

Travelling with the missus and boy, we have 30L of freezer and 90L of fridge.(plenty of room for food and beers).

If a boys fishing trip is on, I have 90L of freeze to keep the fish chilled till I get home and 30L of fridge for beers. (dam, where am I going to put the food! aaah!, who needs food!).

Another 60 or 70L would be perfect for a couple. who ever complained that they had too much room in their fridge!!!!

Evan.......

The beauty of the Evakool is the separate freezer compartment that, with a bit of ingenuity (such as using polystyrene) you could really keep as a proper freezer and use the ambient chill to make your fridge side work more efficiently. It means that you don't have to burrow down into the depths of an Engel or Waeco to retrieve any frozen food which immediately raises the temperature.

If you own and use a food vacuum sealer then this becomes even better. You can vacuum seal your food then freeze it and place it all into the freezer compartment. When you want your steaks/chops/whatever then if you've planned in advance you open the freezer lid, taken out the top items and placed them somewhere to thaw.

A 50L Evakool fridge/freezer is surely all you'll ever need using this system. You know that your cold food is well and truly separated from the frozen stuff. The only thing that would make this even better for the Evakool is a dual temperature control.

Is there another fridge/freezer that has side by side compartments that has this?

The bigger the better. My 70lt Waeco barely did the job for two of us.

My 110lt Waeco is a hell of a fridge and is on a slide, cause once it is full you can't lift the bugger, so it stays in the back of the Navara.
