Any hints on using the Eco-Billy?? I got one a while back, and 'fired' it up over the weekend. The smoke blanketed the neighbour hood, and I was half expecting the RFS to arrive on scene. The five minute boil took about 1/4 hour !!
It's only a '2 cup' job. Can it be used with a metho burner- like in the Trangia set??

I think you used too much Diesel to get it going. Try petrol next time. lol

I have not used mine for quite a few years, but from my fading memory, I just used very small twigs and kept feeding them in. Worked well. As for the metho burner, why not give it a go.

You have to be happy with the convection pushing the smoke up. Judging from he surrounds the wood should not have been wet.
Did it clear or stay smoky.

Can't imagine you'd get any carbon credits for the EcoBilly :-))

That was somewhere out in the Great Vic desert, and it happened every morning tea time - I thought it was pretty funny.

Another Kiwi invention smuggled across the ditch by the possum huggers !

That smoke don't look like a boy scout fire :-))
As already mentioned you only use very small twigs.

Try doing a Google search on any of the following;

Benghazi Boiler
Thermette
Storm Kettle

Yes, that looks like an eco billy.Mine does the same thing . even when using tinder dry twigs. I have started using metho, in a small stainless steel cup that I found somewhere in the shed. Burns cleaner, but takes a bit longer.

I think I will stick to a single burner on top of the gas bottle in the future, though. I'm not chasing carbon credits.

The eco billy will end up on the pile of "camping stuff I bought but don't need" garage sale which is coming up soon.

Hey Signman,
Best way to get the thing going try placing the billy in your tent zip the door closed, stack plenty of green leaves and twig's use a fire lighter and Bobs your uncle. This way the smoke will be contained and you will get what your after in no time flat including the RFS.
Good luck ha!! ha!! up in smoke Eco-Billy and all.....

I modified mine (bush kettle, not eco-billy) by drilling some extra holes 270 degrees around the base. It smokes a bit, but not too bad if you use small sticks / spinifex etc and constantly feed it to keep the flame hot.

I used to use my Bush kettle when camping on the beach, unfortunately after half a carton I'd end up walking in the spot it boiled over as it was not the fire pit, a lot of pain and screaming. And if I made sure the fire was out after a boil I'd end up using too much water. So it's in my "camping and other stuff" pile for when the sky falls in and we have no more electricity ...
