I saw that Allingtons have a range of swags on special at the moment. Has anyone go one from there? What are they like, quality, etc.? We're thinking about getting a double and a couple of singles for the kids. Are the doubles worth getting or are they too cramped inside?
Cheers

Louie,
Allingtons sell different brands and models of swags.
We purchased two "Down Under" swags from them many years ago and they are an excellent quality swag, made in
Adelaide. (Ridgehaven)
Allingtons have the swags layed out on the floor towards the rear of the
shop so take the other half along and try them for fit.
Personally, we prefer the flexibility of single swags, but I recommend you buy the Extra Large (XL) size, which will give you more width than a standard single swag.
Bill.

"but I recommend you buy the Extra Large (XL) size". Oy, Sand Man, what are you trying to say??? lol
I hear what you're saying. I think a single swag is a better option but I get the feeling SWMBO likes the security of me being in there with her (yeah right, I know what she's up to! I'm sick of being treated like a sex object.)
I think it was the Bluey ones we were interested. They appear to be OK from the description. Didn't know they were made here. Shall have a look at them. They have some other interesting stuff in the catalogue as
well.

Don't know about the "Bluey" swags Louie.
The "Down Under" brand is made here. More expensive, but worth it in the long run.

I think Allingtons sell the "True Blue" swags - their quality looks fine when I looked at them. I reckon its pretty hard to buy a bad swag.
As
well as two single swags, we have a Rays double swag (3 hoops) that's the same size as your normal double mattress, and have used it for heaps of trips over the last few years. Replaced the 50mm mattress with a 100mm 4wd mattress because we could. Its bulky to roll up, but space is not an issue for us. We find a double swag is a lot warmer for us than a tent, and it feels cosy. We don't get claustrophobic. Dead simple setup - just roll it out at bedtime, roll it up in the morning. We roll up the fibreglass hoops with the swag.

Didn't get our collection from Arlingtons but have 2 singles and a double. The double was great when I/we were younger and were into different types of adventures but now as we are older the singles are better and the double is used as a single! The hassle with the double, apart from being cramped and lack of sleep with two in it (something that was of little worry a long time ago) is its physical size when rolled up. I'll keep the double but rarely use it but I'll take the single everywhere. As mentioned above make sure the single is roomy enough as all singles aren't the same. Make sure the mattress is good quality and thick enough and the canvas good also. Most swags are used in tents now but occasionally you'll use them under the stars so go for quality.

And the double was from a saddlery in Gippsland and of very good quality and warm as. Its about 15 years old and had a lot of use for the first 8-9 years. One single is a Darche and its good and the other is a Bluey I think and it is OK but not as good as the Darche. They are all traditional swags with no hoops etc. And we also put thicker mattress in the double and extra 'Egg Shell' foam roll things in the singles.

We had a look at Allingtons when we bought our swags, most of the swags the sell now are from overseas...believe India.
We ended up getting Burke and Wills Redgum XL swags, you can get an optional ground sheet with zip so the swag can be rolled and zipped up.
Burke and Wills swags have a life time guarantee and are Australian made using Australian materials.
Single swags are easier to store and roll up, the doubles take up to much room, very awkward to transport and maneuver, heavy and are to small for two people to have a good nights sleep

Bloody Hell!
Alingtons! They were around 25 years ago ( Golden Grove before houses!)
Swags...
Swags are a canvas bag with your bedding in it.
Question 1. Are they cramped?
Ans. If your 6 foot tall and 100kg and so is your Mrs, and the swag is 2foot wide and 5 foot long....yes
Work out how much room you need.
If you need a pvc bottom or not.
How thick a matress you want.
And the thicker the canvas you get the longer it will last. (but it wont roll up as small)
You can get whatever you want.
What do YOU need
Any canvas
shop will make one.
Cheers

Yeah, your right Hairy.
The old tin shed store at Golden Grove had real character.
The new store near Parafield Airport is OK, but still a little "clinical" compared to the old one.
When they were at Grove Grove, they were local. Now I have to travel a bit.
Bill.
