Just had a mobile call from Brother in Law from between William Creek & Coober Pedy. He was amazed to have service. He was in the vicinity of the dog fence...mobile...reception was good, he crossed fence & then service failed shortly after. Could the fence assist reception ? Handy to know for future reference.

Probably would work as good as standing on your left leg with your tongue hanging out the left corner of your mouth.

It happens with Mobiles, move a metre or two and things change.

you forgot the left finger must be in your right ear hole .... , if you have a bad back - this procedure is not recommended ..

Gday,
Coober Pedy itself has had mobile coverage for years...Either 25km or 50 km radius.

Cheers

G'day Hairy, probably a stupid question but I'm not the smartest
bloke around when it comes to technology, but I will ask.......
not sure how far it is from the fence to Coober Pedy but sounds
like a reasonable assumption. 5 deg here & raining...rain is good
but temp is a real PITA.....cheers....oldbaz.

Hi
Don't know about this particular instance, but in general when you get unexpected coverage in a remote area you can just about bet there in a indigenous community close by.
Now is the only time you own
Decide now what you will,
Place faith not in tomorrow
For the clock may then be still

Coober Pedy and the Dog Fence are 14km distant so even GSM with it's 33km maximum (dual time slots excepted) should be able to make that.

"Is the Dog Fence a phone aerial?" - maybe. It may also be an attenuator (negative aerial). Because the propagation of radio signals is so dependent upon their environment there is no way we could say with certainty exactly what impact such a large metal structure (especially a linear one) would have upon either the signal your BIL was receiving or the one he was transmitting.

Given the country around there is pretty flat and that he was only 14km from the cell my _guess_ is that the fence was attenuating the signal?
