We are curious as to whether ordinary toilet paper is suitable for our onboard toilet (Thetford). We are well aware of the environmental issues/requirements when off road and the special paper available, however, given that we will not be venturing off road on our initial trip, will the toilet system (with the appropriate addditives) cope with ordinary paper to be dispensed with at appropriate dump sites at caravan parks?

The only trouble I have had with "normal" toilet paper is the speed the waste tank fills up. 1 wife + 2 kids+ the 3 ply she insists on = 2.5 days for the 21 ltr tank.
The next trip is planned with a light weight paper.

We will be only using our toilet sparingly so can probably avoid this problem. Thanks....never thought about the "ply" bit.

lmao -- lighter paper usually ends in
messy fingers .... teach the scrunchers to become folders and you should use less :)

We used normal paper once in our porta poti before we knew we had to use special paper and when it came time to clean her out there was lots of blockages because the paper didn't dissolve.

Is there a bit difference between a porta poti and a Thetford? I'm not sure. Also, were you using the suggested chemicals. We have two lots, one for the cistern and one for the water tank.

not sure about the differences and yes we use the correct chemicals green stuff in the bottom pink in the top. Once we started using the special paper there was no problem and everything dissolved properly

I would steer clear of Cottonelle as it has a chemical called Kymene in it which strengthens the paper 'stops your finger going through easily', the same as tissues. This brand is not good on septic systems.
The best way to check your paper is to half fill a jar with water, add a few bits of paper and give it a good shake.
If it turns into a sludge it's ok, but if it's stringy I wouldn't use it.

trev.

A lots of people put the paper in a bag and get rid of it,that way the toilet is easily to empty

Gday,
Kim ( and damn dog) once suggested wet and dry sand paper....
Apparently no one uses too much of it, your finger wont go through it and you can rinse it under the tap and use it over and over.

Might be worth a try....

Cheers

Hairy

Moved on from that. We now dry the dishes with the Hessian cloth, and after a bog, give the bum a scrub with it out in the bush.

Clean the cloth up next morning with a bit of left over Billy water and things are fine.

Can't understand what the fuss is about.

LOL

PS Your a right bloody dill

Regards

Kim

Get a Jimmy's Thunderbox !

End of story, and carry a small bucket of lime with you as well.
After each deposit, sprinkle a desert spoon of lime on it..
Brilliant, and virtually no smell.

We also have a Porta-Pottie, and use Reece Chemical, in it. But as soon as it was setup, women and kids just fill the bloody thing, and then we end up using the "thunderbox" anyway, so now that's all I take !

If we feel we have to take the porta-pottie, then I just use normal paper..."Safe for septic tank" written on it !

Cheers
Bucky
