I am off to Tibooburra in two weeks and I have three days to get there from Sydney. I thought I might spend my first night at Mt Grenfell and have a look around at the aboriginal "art" the next morning .

Has anyone got any details or tips on the best places to go or the best place to camp etc at Mt Grenfell ? I looked through the archives and was surprised that I could only find one mention of Mt Grenfell - by MAX .

Also I am debating whether I should drive to Broken Hill and then go up the higher standard Silver City Hwy or turn north at Wilcannia and go up through White Cliffs . What is the road like up through there ? I am towing a van which is OK on dirt .

Thanks a lot ,

Willie .

Geez, how lucky are you! Think I'll send Janet back to work and I'll join in the travels...(LOL)

I visited the site a couple of years ago and it was interesting enough to take the time to go in. You could then head up through Tilpa and on to Tibooburra via White Cliffs. I quite like that drive.

I've got a couple of those books out if you want to have a read while you're away.

Cheers, Baz

Hi Willie,
Mt Grenfell a day only visit area (no camping) but still worth a look at art work. Dirt/rock road in. BBQ's and long drop dunnies. A fairly easy walk around to art sites. White Cliffs well worth a visit. Tar all the way. You can easily lose 24 hours there. Main track from there to Tibooburra OK just watch out for a couple of creek washouts. Camp area at White Cliffs basic but OK. Don't forget to drop in to Milparincka just short of Tibooburra. Worth a look too. And out to the old gold mine areas around Mt Browne, plus Explorer sites not far from town. We have gone through that way many times and usually break up our journey:- bush camp approx 40 kms east of Cobar at Muriel Tank, then White Cliffs, then Tibooburra. Hope this helps a bit. Have great trip. Oh! NPWS have an info sheet about Mt Grenfell either from Cobar office or hopefully there should be some pamphlets out there.
Cheers, Sally.

Saly ,

No camping , that's a pity . there is a really good free camping spot 63 km west of Cobar , so I will stay there the night and commune with the goats .

Then I will go via White Cliffs as you suggest .

I will be gold detecting at Mt Brown for 10 days and then I think I will go back down to Wilcannia and go up along the Darling to Bourke .

Thanks a lot ,

Willie .

I have looked at the Mt Grenfell sign a number of times whilst whizzing past and thought...must go there one day...lol

You could go Nyngan, Bourke,Wanaaring, Milparinka or

via Wilcannia, White Cliffs. Last time I went this road was in 03 and from memory the road was OK. Bit of tourist traffic along this road so not sure what condition it would be in.

Thinking of going to the same place next week. Working out fuel money atm :-)

Cheers

To my shame, its about 25 years since we went to Mt Grenfell, but at the time our daughters were studying art for HSC, and were interested in Aboriginal Art. To us, with a company Commodore and trailer and three kids, it was a great morning spent on our trip to the Flinders. Huge amounts of art, which even then were protected by fencing, but still very accessible.

I see on the DECC web site Mount Grenfell Historic Site that they still do not have camping there. The Cobar Caravan Park is an OK overnight spot, otherwise you'd have to pick up a rest area from Camps 4.

As for the road through White Cliffs, its bitumen to the town and I'd be surprised if you had any trouble from there to the Silver City Highway or to Wanaaring (I enjoy the tiny caravan park at Wanaaring). Subject always to ringing the copper at one of the towns if there has been any rain in the corner country in the previous couple of weeks.

That help?

Hi Max ,

I wondered whether you would see this post ! You have been lurking .Twenty five years ago - it's about time you got out there again !

I have decided to go up to White Cliffs on the black-top and come back south though the Paroo-Darling NP on the dirt road . Then off up the Darling River to Bourke . I am going to make a post asking if it's better to drive up the Darling on the north side, or the south .

Thanks ,

Willie

We nearly went into Mt G a few months back when we thought we'd have to wait a day in Cobar for some friends, but they turned up earlier so headed west. Last twice we've been out in Corner Country it's pelted with rain and we've had to pick and choose tracks, even staying in Innaminka & Birdsville several nights each.

My son & I did manage to get to Coongie Lakes last year though - had been trying since 1989 to find the track open would you believe. Its not a bad track - you could get a reasonable dirt road van out there if you are going to Innaminka.

Saw that Paroo NP after I finished the previous post - sounds interesting.

Enjoy!

Must have been a couple of years since we went out there for a look, we were living in Cobar so it was just a day trip.
Must have been during the summer, heaps of flies! I remember too we got a flat tyre on the way in, some small pointy rock had staked the tyre - just bad luck.
It's a nice spot and a shame that no camping is allowed. The Art was easily accessible which was great because of the two rugrats we had with us, we're not Aboriginal Art lovers by any means, but it's a place we would have visited again.
