Hi everyone,
I've done a search through the archives for the answer to my question, ended up with a lot of map threads but not too many rasters.

So to the question, is it worth paying the extra money for the premium raster maps. It is indicated that there is less compression and therefore clearer maps.

Can anyone confirm this please.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Wayne.

Wayne,

Are you referring to a comparison between NatMap Raster and Natmap Raster Premium?

If yes, this may help. (from Geoscience Australia's Website)

What are the differences between NATMAP Raster and NATMAP Raster Premium?

NATMAP Raster Premium has higher quality images than NATMAP Raster. Premium edition images have lower compression rates applied and in some cases smaller pixel size.
NATMAP Raster Premium is supplied on 2 DVD-ROMs whilst NATMAP Raster is supplied on 4 CD-ROMs.
NATMAP Raster has 514 individual maps based on MGA94 (UTM projection). In NATMAP Raster Premium, these maps have been mosaiced into separate UTM zone maps i.e. zone 55 contains all s*55** numbered maps as a single map image.
Map content and software operation is identical between versions i.e. NATMAP Raster and NATMAP Raster Premium operate in exactly the same way.
NATMAP Raster Premium Landsat satellite image has 25 metre pixel size, whereas the NATMAP Raster satellite image is coarser with 50 metre pixels.

The only digital maps I use, are the Natmap Premium ones. I haven't found I need any others.

Bill.

G'day Bill,

Many thanks for your reply.

I've read the comparison notes on a number of websites, EO being one of them, and now I'm thinking that maybe I didn't word my question just quite right. I was after thoughts from people that had viewed both mapset types and whether there was a considerable difference in clarity? That's the trouble being a visual person, I need to see what it looks like! LOL
May have to travel to a map shop and see for my self, though I thought it was worth asking the question on EO.

Your recommendation of the Raster Premium mapset is noted.

Thanks,
Wayne.

Wayne,

My understanding is that the Premium version is much better in terms of clarity and really comes into its own if used with a laptop or PC.

However, the Premium version is no good for using with a PDA. The file size is simply too big.

Is anyone able to verify/clarify this?

TIA..

Jeff

well i was using the single 250k mosaic of australia (just under 3GB file) & it ran ok on my Ipaq HX4700. only difference was that it took a little longer to load than the zone specific files but no lag once running

I use the premium version with my PDA - I load the zones I am likely to use on a 2 GB card which works fine.

I don't have all of Australia on the PDA, only about 2/3 of the country which is fine until I do a trip around Australia - I guess then I will buy a bigger SD card

A bit late on my response but ditto to what Troopy wrote. I have a HX4700 and I have loaded the Eastern States Zones( 55 & 56) loaded onto a separate CF card which leaves my SD card free for
running Tom Tom around town. If I have a need to load more zones I'm going to buy additional CF cards. I have noticed If you load the whole of the raster premium images onto one card, the PDA is much slower on moving map so I limit myself to two zones per card.

The Natmap Raster 2008 is due out soon. I rang Geoscience Australia last Monday and was told it should have been in the shops last Friday. Alas......went to the Map Shop and they still don't have it in. Off on the trip tomorrow.

It will be cheaper than the current Premium maps and of a much higher quality (so I'm told) and will be on two DVD's - hence lots more room required to run it.

Hi Longtooth,
I'd noticed on some sites during my research that there was a promotion for the new maps, might have to save the extra and get the latest series.

Thanks for your comments and enjoy your trip.

Cheers,
Wayne.

I also suspect that updated (revised) NATMAP 250K data will be incorporated in the product as even the Premium 2005 still had the odd outdated JOG 250K map included.

Thank you to everyone that replied to my question.
It looks like I will be waiting and saving the dollars to buy the new set of maps, it's hoped by then that we will have settled on a more capable laptop and all will be well.

Cheers everyone,
Wayne.
