Vince

According to my Hema map it is 5206km but not sure via which route

According to ExplorOz Places page it is 4739 via the NT, Barkley and Buchanan Hwy's

Sydney, Port Augusta, Alice Springs, Halls Creek(via Tanami), Broome should be even shorter

Sydney, Wilcannia, Tibooburra, Innamincka, Mt Dare, Alice Springs even shorter

And Alice, Kunawarritji, Broome via Kidson Track even shorter.

Take yer pick

Cheers

I believe if you have a capable vehicle via Alice would be much quicker.

Roughly about the same, depending upon how fast and far you travel per day I'd guess.
Say 6 days to Alice, two on the Tanami and a couple of days to Broome from Halls Creek ? My memory fails me.
But trying to get there too quickly is a recipe for disaster.

Hi Vince

Just did this, Nyngan, Bourke, Mt Isa, Katherine, Kununurra.
This is the fastest way, all black top, the only way to make it shorter is to go through Top Springs and I went this way, the first half is great the second not so great, so I came back through Katherine and it was much better.
I did Kununurra in four days at just over 1100Ks each day but it is really easy driving.

Have fun

Craig ,

I did exactly the same thing as you last year and did it in four days from Sydney . Blew a tyre @ 100 kph and destroyed a rim going through Gregory NP - exciting . Camped the third night out from Sydney in Jaspar Gorge in Gregory NP and got to Kununurra on morning of the fourth day .

I was driving long hours and not towing .

I would recommend the Top Springs way for scenery and Katherine for comfort .

Willie .

Hi Vince

I plot my trips with whereis.com and this goes through Top Springs but it turns right and does not go through Gregory NP, this would be OK in daylight hours.

Hi Willie

That part of the road cracked my exhaust and blew the daylights out of one of my rear airbags, the problem with the road is it is really good so you tend to let the speed build up then from nowhere your car is either flying or bottoming out, all part of the adventure! ( kids loved it ).

Really pushing it for which I really do not reccomend you can get to Alice in 2 days. I recently left Sydney at 5 am from hornsby and arrived at Rainbow valley @ 10pm the next night. Sydney/Alice is 2880kms.
Alice to Halls I would presume u could do in 2 days. From there I have no idea as it has been over 10 years since I did that leg.

Hey Vince,

I drove from Gosforg to Broome December last year, Left Gosford 5am on a Friday and arrived in Broome 8pm on the Sunday, that was up through Queensland and through to katherine and then down from there, got to longreach the first night about 2am and slept till 6am, fueled up and then got to just south of Katherine about the same time Sunday morning, up early and then through to Kununurra and then down to Broome.

Long drive and slept like a baby when i got home,

Josh

Travelling at the speed limit I regularly do Sydney to Broken Hill in 13hrs, that is with the family on board and towing the camper.

I have also done Broken Hill to Coober Pedy via Pt Augusta in about 11hrs, trailer & family in tow. We were not in a hurry but not wasting time either.

I reckon another day would put you through Alice but having never been up that way I would be guessing the rest.

After the Sydney Olympics a mate of mine got a job returning tourist coaches to Sydney from Darwin, no passengers. They had 2 drivers and with a little bit of tinkering the governors/speed limiters proved unreliable.Darwin to Sydney in 36 hours. Yeah it scared me to think about it too.

Quicker and shorter via Tanami Road. I reckon 4 days from Sydney to Broome if your in a hurry. 2 days to Alice Springs, and they'll be longish days, 1 day up the Tanami to Billiluna and the last day into Broome. The last two days will be easy as!

Methinks the Tanami Road might slow you down a tad. It has not been graded for a while and is not good in places. Its a long hard day from Alice to Billiluna

We used to leave Billiluna about 2-00 pm on a Friday afternoon and get into Alice about 1-30am and remember we lost 1hr 30mins going over the border! On the return, on the Sunday, we would leave Alice about 9 and get into Billiluna about 5, remember we gained the 1hr and 30 min. That was in 95/96 so the roads were probably better as were the vehicles back then! Did the same 04 and got to Sturt Creek at 5-00 but it was flooded so back out through Balgo, Mulan around the lake and into Billiluna the next day (Camped at Mulan the night).
Long hard day! The schoolies did it, the nuns did it, the store keeper did it, the Admin Manager did it in his Falcon and that included going around the Lake due to flooding, but then it depends on what you're used to. We did it on a Christmas eve once and didn't leave Alice until after lunch but we only went as far as Balgo.
So Vince wants to get to Broome ASAP and thats what he has or can do. The Tanami can be done in a day. The NT side is generally better than the WA side but the majority of it in the NT. It is just a dirt road and if anyone thinks it is difficult or challenging, stay in the suburbs.

Sure, it can be done in a day, preferably in a Hire Car or a Government vehicle. 80/90 max when I was there last. I am not aware of what Vince's outback roads experience is but sitting on anything over that speed and you are looking for trouble.

I drove from Balgo to Alice in June. The road was worse between Balgo and the border than the rest of the Territory road but that bit also wasn't all that flash. Numerous road trains along the route servicing the mining industry chop it up. Bulldust, uneven surface, corrugations aplenty and in the middle of nowhere 7 kilometres of bitumen.

Prior to that my last trip along there was in 94 and prior to that in the 80's and 70's. The road was better in those days.

Yes, the Tanami Track is just a bloody outback road.

These figures come from the NRMA travel planer

Via Qld - 4732 km - 58 H 24 M driving time

Via the Tanami Rd - 4512 km - 59 H 55 M driving time.

Shortest route - 4382 km - 69 H 58 M driving time.

I would suggest travelling through Qld and not bashing your vehicle along the Tanami Track trying to keep up your schedule.

Just back from WA to NQ. I would suggest up the bitumen from Sydney through western Q to Mount Isa head for Rankine Road just west of Camoolweal to the Tablelands Highway (near Brunette Downs) head north and turn west on Barkly Stock Route to Elliot. Up the Stuart Highway to Dunmarra left onto Buchanan Highway to Top Springs west to Halls Creek via Buntine Highway and over to Broome.
Rankine Road, Barkly Stock Route and Dunmarra to Halls Creek (except for 100 k) are all dirt, but great road, no traffic and a big short cut.
