Hi all,

My ARB (6 years old) compressor has started to play up by blowing fuses when running for over 5 mins so it is time to leave the compressor to run the lockers and by a new one for the tyres. I was thinking of getting a portable one so I can do the camper tyres as well. Can anyone please advise what is the best one for the money to buy now. Thinking around the $400 mark. I have heard that ARB has a new you beaut one out and have also heard the Twin blue tounge is good.

Thanks for your feed back in advance.

Made in USA

Also have a second as backup, a Blue Tongue , but this twin Tongue would be a good one also

Thanks Doug,

The OL Blue tounge seams to have a much higher flow rate than the Ox. Have you found this to be the case in real life situations?

Goona,

If I was in the market for one, the new ARB portable compressor would be my choice.

The new warn ones are nice, and are starting to become available in Australia. See:

otherwise, one of the viair ones, see here:http://www.viaircorp.com/productmain.html

I fitted a warn single 12cfm before a trip to the Simpson, pumps up a 35x12.5 from flat to 40psi in 2 mins but costs about $900

Why don't you rebuild it?

We have the new hi volume ARB compressor and it works well, gets a bit hot.

Olcoolone,

I would but time is limited as we are doing a 7 month trip around Australia and we ar only in Darwin fo 2 more days. We are heading towards WA and will be doing a lot of sand driving so I was also looking for a better performing compressor. When i get back to Bris I will deffinately be getting it rebuilt and that way I will have a spare as well. Thanks for your thoughts.

Goona,

I had a weak moment in an ARB store a little while ago and for no other reason other than the fact that I wanted one I upgraded from the old ARB compressor to the new one.

I did a time test from 18psi to 35psi using the old one and the new one prior to taking the old one out and the new one is about twice as fast.

The other advantage was that it plugged straight in. The old harness & the new harness differ only in that they use a 30A maxi blade fuse in the wiring harness rather than the standard blade fuse.

They bolt in the same spot. The new one is much more flexible in the mounting arrangements.

I'd just pull the old one out and put one of the new ones in. You'd get away without changing the fuse holder - I did, but had to up the 25A fuse to a 30A fuse.

I can't stand carrying something that takes up extra space that I can permanently mount in the vehicle.

I don't know the other one you are talking about from first hand experience, but I can recommend the ARB one.

Geocacher,

Thanks for your feed back. I ended up bying a portable ARB compressor today from the Darwin store. They were very helpful and sugested that if the original ends up totally stuffing up tat there is a smaller less expensive one just purely for the locker of which I will probally go with as it was pretty cheap. Won't pump the tyres but.

I have a twin tongue mounted in each of the 4WD's and a single blue tongue in a portable carry tin............

the single is my original purchase followed by the twins over the years..........they have proved very reliable for my purposes and I have never felt tempted to try others simply because that dollar I save I may regret one day...

having said that there is a plethora of brands and prices out there to suit everyone.......some of the cheaper brands give some people a good run over the years..

ultimately the $ you spend is your decision obviously....just look carefully at the rating (continous or not) and the quality of the hose and fittings...they do get very hot at the compressor end and some of the cheaper brands fail in this area

cheers

Possibly the best high capacity compressor available at the moment would be the Boss available on ebay. It's conciderably quicker than the new ARB compressor & even the Twin Tounge with the bonus of being continuously rated as it's fan cooled. For $495 you can get the full kit which includes air tank, heat proof hose, air switch, check valve & solinoid. Makes the twin tounge look grossly over priced particually as the quality & longivety of the unit is excellent. Have been running one of the original Big Thumper compressors (predesessor)for 7 years, at one time pumping 13 over sized tyres up in a row.
I'd toss the old ARB unit out as it's likely to sieze anyway & permenantly mount a new compressor with a hose run to an outlet at the rear of the car for your trailer.
Cheers Craig......
