G'day all, I was hoping to get some idea from owners of canvas cabin tents of actual set up times and any pro's and con's that they have encountered. I am looking at an outdoor connection 15x12 2 room with awning type. We have a family of four and currently use a Sportiva odyssey double dome and its becoming a bit of a squeeze as the boys get older. Would you also reccommend using a tarp over the top to keep it cool/dry as the case may be? I have a 24x30 tarp at the moment which works a treat over the dome. I appreciate any and all replies
Cheers and beers

We have a 15x12 canvas tent ("freetime" I think - although they are all largely the same). It probably takes about 45mins with 1.5 people (better half is mostly watching kids).
The fiddliest thing is the awning poles with about 8 interconnecting poles. On the plus side there aren't many ropes/pegs required and no fly, obviously.
It gets hot in direct sunlight and if you're using in summer you'd probably want that tarp over it.
I imagine you could get setup time
well under 30mins with 2 people and a bit of practice.
We've since given up on ours though as it is too bulky and difficult to manage/carry compared to our new blackwolf turbo tent, which is still big enough (just).

I have a Carlton Canvas, (local manufacturer in Sthrn
Sydney), it is a great tent but like all tents of that type it takes about 45mn to set up. Putting the walls around the awning (sunroom) takes another 10 min.
I rarely use the tent these days. Because the tent is so bulky I was forced to either tow a trailer or fit a roof rack for virtually any trip. I hate roof racks, so for me it was towing. I figured if I was towing anyway why not tow a camper. For us it was a great decision, the camper is quicker to set up, more comfortable, has more storage space which is waterproof and accessible from inside the camper. It is also better built than the average box trailer and I have no hesitation taking any where I want to.
We now only use the tent to provide accommodation for friends who are travelling with us if they don't have their own gear.

Thanks for the relpies guys, 45 minutes is not too bad i reckon! I too will have the 1.5 people to put the tent up, so thats not a problem. I understand they will be big and bulky but most if not all of our camps at this stage involve towing an 18 foot boat along for the ride so we have plenty of room for "accessories" or "junk" whichever way you look at it.
Thanks again for the replies

I'm not sure if you're watching still watching this thread but I am keen to sell my 15x12 tent. It has only been used about 3 times (maybe 10 nights all up).
Would have to pick it up from
Brisbane - too heavy to post economically.
Let me know if you are keen.

Hey scott,
Yeah it is a freetime but I think they might've been taken over by primus and also sold under the kookaburra brand. All the big canvas cabin tents appear to be the same basic design. This one seems to have good quality canvas and poles etc - all in perfect condition.

The colour scheme on ours isn't quite the same as that one.
This isn't the best shot of it but gives you an idea

I'll try to dig up some other photos.
Might be better to chat in emails or PMs (which doesn't seem to be an option without full
membership on exploroz). You don't happen to be a member of ausfish or 4wdmonthly forums do you? If so you could PM me on there (search for "chisel").
Cheers,
Steve

45 minutes to set up a tent!
We have the Primus Tourer Extended centrepole type tent. Made from same material but takes only minutes to set up.
Unroll tent, 6 pegs into the ground and then put up the centre pole and rear poles - if it is not fully done in 10 minutes there is a problem. Also they are around $400.
An alternative for you and the boys would be to use two of these instead of one big tent. Then you get a bit of separation and privacy (while still being right next to each other) as
well as having the opportunity to just use the one tent if the boys don't go on a particular trip.
Cheers
Muddy
