I will be travelling from Cameron Corner and I am interested in travelling the old (really old) Strzelecki Track from Merty Merty south to the Strzelecki crossing. I was in the area a year ago and had a look but I couldn't find the start which should be around Merty Merty itself. I went to the other end and drove a few kays up from the crossing and the track looks to continue, also it appears on Google Earth. Can anyone tell me exactly how to get onto the track at the northern end. We last drove this piece of the track in 1980 and although winding and slow was very picturesque.
Thank you,

Mike.

Mike

It appears on Natmap 250k to go through the station homestead area. Best you ask them if you may drive that way.

Cheers

Thanks Willem,
I would like to ring them and ask before I leave home, but I can't find a phone number in the electronic white pages. Any ideas on how to contact them?

Mike

I Googled and found some info on Indigenous Land Use Agreements and so found the owners name, Pamela J. Rieck. Merty Merty Pastoral Company.

Phone for Merty Merty is 08 86759904 Fax 08 86759911

There is also a similar name in Adelaide 08 82943338(could be the same person)

I also found this thread already on Google...amazing!!!

Cheers

Hi Mike,

Drove this track about 4 weeks ago. Easy enough to find - just take the main route south from Innaminka, until you meet the Moomba road and turn right. It's about 16 k's down the road and has an old sign pointing left to Merty Merty and the old Strzelecki - it's marked.

The road itself all the way thru Merty Merty and Cameron's Corner is pretty good. There's a whole heap of fairly new mine sites along it and it's well maintained. The road from Merty Merty to CC is a barrel of fun - good surface and it's like riding a roller-coaster.

It's all good surface. Due to the mining, it's all signposted.

If you want to do the track from Innaminka, there would be someone at the Roadhouse who could point you in the right direction

Hi Scott,
There are three parts to the old Strzelecki, firstly the northernmost part from Innamincka to where it crosses the new track, this section is generally well worn two wheel tracks and easy to drive, second is the middle section from there to Merty Merty which is generally graded and wide. Finally from Merty Merty south to the Strzelecki crossing. It is this last piece that I am interested in. If you travelled from Innamincka to Cameron Corner via Merty Merty you would have been to the North of this section. Please let me know if I have got it wrong.
Cheers Mike.

Mike,

Yes, apologies for not noticing you were heading south of Merty Merty,

Try the 250K Strzlecki SH5402 map - it's on there

Thanks Scott,
Yes the map shows the track but it looks like I have to drive through Merty Merty's front yard to get to it. I was hoping not to do that but now Willem has found a phone number I will ring and ask for permission or directions. Love your troopy, I had one from 1981 to 2004 couldn't break it.
