when using taps, is there a rule where you measure them so to determine the drill size? or is there a chart or something?
cheers Shane.

Hi Shane, there is a chart that will tell you exactly what you need to know, try Blackwoods or any major supplier to the engineering/tool
shop industry

For metric threads it's easy....just subtract the pitch from the diameter. So for say an M10x1.5, the tapping drill would be 8.5.
Try
this chart

Gday,
There are a few "rules of thumb" and a proper way. It depends on a few things.
I havent read all the replies (links) but if you havent already got what your looking for or want a chart for future reference...let me know and Ill scan something and post it or give you an answer to something specific.
Cheers

thanks guy's, nothing in particular but have a box of taps and was just wondering how you get the right drill. i normally just put a verni on the start of the tap and measure that. if it is to tight i go up a size or two till i get it right. takes more time though.
cheers.
