Strange question i know, but after speaking with a fella about the winch on his 80 series, he told me of a "funny" thing that ratbags get up to...
Apparently they find your parked car, un-reel your winch cable, fling it over the roof and hook it onto your rear bar...
They then short out the 3 pin remote socket with a paper-clip and your winch starts reeling the cable in... until it has caved your roof in!
He said the 5 pin remote plugs prevent this, but i'm thinking a second paper-clip or a few jumper-wires may get the same result??
Anyone had or heard of an experience like this?

Its an URBAN MYTH and the fella has just repeated it...it has been around the forums and
camp fiires for years
My winch cable is not connected and lies quietly next to the battery. A simple wing nut connects it if it is needed.
Cheers

Been a "Story" thats been going around for years now.
Never seen it or spoken to anyone who can say it has happened to them.
If you can show me a real life photo then I may be inclined to believe it, until then it remains a load of crap.

No worries, thanks. Thought it sounded possible, but since it's a myth i'll continue saving for a winch bar and winch!
(just moved to an area for work where there is alot of crime and would be a bit upset if it happened to me and was later told "it's a common thing if you don't do this...")
Thanks again.

I've seen it done,
well the results anyway, GU patrol nearly cut in half.
The other variation that was done in a
carpark in western
sydney was to pull the cable out and pass it along the line of
park cars to a concrete pillar, then operate the winch so that the winch vehicle pulls all the cars together between it and the pillar.
This scenario would be a nightmare to sort out with insurance co ;-))
no longer have the pics of the results due to hard drive crash.

also the other one that has done the rounds is the kids throwing the cable around a large tree branch and firing the winch up with a 10c piece and it
winches itself up into the trees hahaha Paul

That's one damm big winch in a very light 4by to be able to do that. Single pull most
winches would be stalled just getting the front
wheels off the ground.

There's a great scene in 'The Gods must be crazy' where a Landrover gets winched up the tree.

This one comes up from time to time. I'm not saying it has never happened anywhere in the world. There is always someone who says 'I've seen it'. But I've never seen any evidence like a picture in all the times I've seen it discussed.
If this was even an occasional problem, there would be pics flooding the internet. We have all seen examples of images that have reached millions of computers in a short time when something unusual happens. A car cut in half by its own winch would have to be in that category - but yet no pics.
I think that says something. As I said, it might have happened - I'm not suggesting those who claim to have seen it are not telliing the truth. Just suggesting that if it happened more than once or twice in the past 5 years (pretty much anywhere in the world), there would be evidence.
Just my view.

One reason I have fitted a simple battery isolation switch to
mine (just in case)

Trev, I found that those isolation switches you can buy with the big red plastic key are useless for the sorts of amps a winch _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx.
On my winch, I isolate it by a simpler method, which doesn't involve the large cables.
I opened up the Warn control box and found a small gauge wire that goes from one of the pins in the plug, to the permanently live solenoid pack. I cut this wire as close as I could to the soleneoid pack and added an extension piece of similar-sized wire to it. I took this piece of wire up into the engine bay and connected it to a simple toggle switch. The other side of the toggle switch is wired up to a fused power source. The switch is left in the OFF position, except when I need to operate the winch. Turning it to ON simply replicates the way the winch control box was before I attacked it! hahaha
Cheers

Hmmmmm Bill
You can really complicate things.....hahahahahaha
As I have mentioned before...my positive winch cable isn't attached to power so there can be no issues when out bush or anywhere else for that matter. If the winch is required then I pop the bonnet, connect the winch cable via a wing nut, plug the hand control power cord in and it becomes operational. Takes about 15 seconds.
Cheers

One thing about human nature is that if it occurs to one person to try it, he will probably try it.....or is that just me.LOL
Never seen it happen but i have an isolation switch that will stop any attempts.
If your control box is outside the vehicle, then any fool with a loop of wire can operate the winch. So, just because you may not have seen it doesn't mean it can't be done. It is electrically possible.

It is only electrically possible if your winch is connected to the battery.......LOL

Yeh true Willem,
But I am one of those people who don't want to have to rebuild my vehicle every time i need to do something....LOL
Maybe when i retire i'll slow down a bit.....NAH!!!!!
A winch is something that, to me, should be on hand when required.... again that's probably just me.

My winch set up is the same as Willem's not electrically connected. To power the Winch lift the bonnet, undo the wing nut on the positive battery terminal, connect the winch power cable, do the wing nut up and your away.
I have also made a fitting so you cannot pull out the winch cable in the Free Spool setting. This fitting keeps the winch in the Engaged setting. OK if a spanner is used to undo the bolt holding the fitting in Engaged I may have a problem.

Some really good ideas here. Simply isolating the winch's power either from under the bonnet or inside the cabin sounds like the most simple and effective way eh. Cheers ;)

Use a hydrolic power winch. Engine needs to be running for them to work.
