Hi All,

Just got in from work and heard the news.
While the 'experts' and 'ordinary battlers' were arguing with each other, the poor little bugger was dying.

The Japs will probably never take us seriously again.

Cheers.....Lionel.

Colin certainly raised a lot of interest and feeling. Sad that we couldn't save him. They believe they found his mother dead down the southern coast.
Hopefully things will be learnt from this for the better.

Young Colin was actually Colleen.

I wonder if it was her mother found dead.

Cheers Kev

Please excuse my ignorance, but who is Colin?

I listen to ABC Radio all day and am not aware of Colin's passing.

Jim.

Jim, 'Colin' was a small juvenile humpback whale that swam into Pittwater, north of Sydney Harbour in the last 3 or 4 days. It was seen nuzzling a 40' yacht looking for milk.

Lots of people looked for ways to save it but it seems there was no practical solution in the time available; meantime the whale became weak and distressed so the National Parks people euthanased it today.

Colin was renamed 'Colette' after she was discovered to be female. Meantime an adult humpback has been sighted south of Sydney being eaten by sharks. It's been assumed she was Colette's mother.

Cheers, RayJen

It amazes me with all the whales slaughtered by the Japanese for "scientific research", that nobody knew the structure of whale milk!

Just wondering if the so called experts could still take some kind of
a sample from the dead Whale washed up on the beach, anything
is better than nothing, might come in handy if it happens again,
it might not be possible, but who knows.

So someone gives a wild animal a name and suddenly everyone wants to start mothering it. What happened is not unusual in nature. Animals and baby animals frequently die sometimes suffering extreme agony. Euthanatizng the whale was the kindest thing that they could have done - apart from re-uniting it with it's mother.

Mate, what you say is partially correct. If the animal was orphaned 1000 kms out to sea then no one would have noticed.

This happened in our own back yard and I would expect human nature to kick in and try to help a vunerable creature.

Cheers....Lionel.

Have to say I agree with DOI on this.

Seems to me that the dribble bottle is almost full, without much room left for common sense.

Animals and humans cark it every day. What's so different here, apart from the usual media carry on.

Regards

Lionel

Sometimes we humans, the dominant specie on this planet, have to make decisions on behalf of suffering animals to put them out of their misery.

This happens on a daily basis all over the world.

Unfortunately media hype(especially when it comes to whales) gets the ire up of the uninformed and irrational citizens who cannot see the wood for the trees.

And that's life. It happens.

Yep its nature at work.
The poor little bugger was doomed from the start if that was its dead mother out there in the ocean. It happens every other day but not usually where we can see it. That's what is different about this case.

Sad but apparently unavoidable according to the experts.

Yep,
Saw that happen the other day when a road train went through a mob of roos.

They ended up in trees, fences, all over the place.

Talk about a dominator.

Michael,

Next thing you know they will be wanting to hold a memorial service for the thing.

Its going to be a slow news week next week following the olympics so I guess the media can play on that for a few days.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

And how many more innocent victims of Robert Mugabe`s murdering regime have been killed, but the world does nothing but sit on their laurels and make sanctimonoius rhetoric, yet the media goes beserk about a dying whale. We are a all born to die. Thats the only piece of paper that has a warranty on it that cant be altered by any one. As for a memorial - come on get a life . next we will be building memorials for everything and anything.
