Just in time for the Birdsville Cup, Huey threatens to make an appearance. We'll be heading to Birdsville from Sydney via the scenic route, through the Flinders Ranges. Then planning a sortie across the Simpson Desert. Tenting it too. According to the Foxtel weather channel widespead rain is predicted through out the entire inland.
Could be in for an interesting trip.

I'm up in the Innaminka area and for the past two weeks it has been as cold as charity. For the past few days black clouds have been rolling in from the west. It sure feels like rain.

I just drove the Cooper about an hour ago at sunrise. I crossed it between Jackson oil field and Ballera. The water does not appear to be flowing under the bridge. I am going to drive to Innaminka on Monday afternoon so I will let you know if it is flowing over the causeway. I will drop into the pub and ask about the fish & yabbies as well. I'll put up a post on Tuesday morning.

Sorry to put a black cloud over your holidays chaps, but by gee we need good rain in time for spring. Most dams in NSW are below 20% still, and their is very little subsoil moisture in most areas.

You're welcome to the rain mate, I just don't want to get stuck out there for weeks on end, we can't afford the downtime. We'll have to keep a close weather eye on things and make decisions an the track.

Hi Aussie.Nomad
Human nature the way it is, me included, always like fine weather when we head bush. On our last venture out in the Western Deserts in June, we encountered rain on a number of days. Not much fun getting a fire going and out in the swag. The locals that we spoke to wished that they received a lot more rain.
Some locals from here in Clare, have a station just south of Coober Pedy. Speaking with them last week, as usual the story soon changes to the weather. They have only had 3 wet days in the last 3 months, and that was early June when they received 60 points, or as a metric measurement of 15mm of rain in 3 days. She said how they would love to see the heavens open up, as they have not had one sprinkle of rain since.

Cheers

Stephen

The only comment that I can make to this thread is "Come On Huey Send It Down" 30+mil across the interior and the Murray Darling Basin catchment areas will be more than welcome.

Hi Greendog
If you get into Clare before noon, come into the Retravison Store, right next to the Post office. I have lunch about 12, so if after that, give me a call at home 88423662 and would like to catch up with you.

Cheers

Stephen

The country west of Alice is as dry as. Around Haasts Bluff its like a desert. The land has been overgrazed terribly and the few remaining cattle look like they needed to be shot. There is no grass, and the trees have been chewed to head height.

Ormiston Gorge was very low. The ranger said they have had no rain for nine months.

We left Chambers Pillar this morning, and coming through the Hugh River Stock Route, drove into dark menacing clouds - thunder lightening, and raining by the time we neared the highway. As we were planning to go to Rainbow Valley for tonight, i asked at the Stuart Wells RH - the lady said more like this forecast for the next four days - don't try going to Rainbow Valley. So we came back to Alice Springs (around 70 kms away). I told people here about the rain - they laughed and didn't believe me. When i said about the four day forecast they said BS - more like four minutes.

As we are heading into the West MacDonnells in a few days time, i will be watching weather forecasts with interest. Last week was freezing here - with bitterly cold wind. Tonight it is warm and humid.
