In 1978 we travelled the Strzelecki Track as part of a trip from Adelaide to Brisbane. Last year we were in the area and tried to retrace the old track from the northern end. This is easy from Innamincka down to Merty Merty and although the last piece shows on Natmaps, we could not find a way in except by entering Merty Merty station. So we travelled the current track down to the Strzelecki crossing. Here on the western side of the creek we found the wheel tracks of the old track – commencing next to where a large scrape has been cut and seems to contain permanent water. We followed this up a couple of kays and made a note to investigate later. On looking on Google Earth the track can be seen and also on Natmaps. I asked on this forum about any knowledge about the track or any contacts fro Merty Merty. Willem was able to come up with a phone number so I rang the station. The man I spoke to told me that the track was closed at the Merty Merty end and not maintained. He did not want me to access it from his end due to us having to drive right past the homestead. Next week we are travelling from Brisbane via Noccundra to Cameron Corner and then to Merty Merty to join up with the Strzelecki Track – going to Adelaide to visit the MIL. It would have been nice to include this old track but it looks like it is never to be used again from end to end. If anyone can pick up the southern end and follow it up a way I would be interested in feedback. It was very picturesque from memory and no doubt a good campsite could be found along the creek, but you would have to backtrack to get out again.

Oh well, them are the breaks.

I spoke with Milty today. They are starting to move house this coming weekend but it should take a while as he is the local Steptoe here in the Borough....LOL

Cheers
