Just enquiring about mounting an HF aerial on the spare wheel carrier
Would any one have any pictures of the mounting set up?

What vehicle are you talking about as spare wheel carriers differ.
If its a Kaymar one and you can weld You could make one out of some 1" box and some 6mm flat with a couple of bracing gussets in about 2 hours for next to nothing
Slide it down where the lightis supposed to go

mine

If you have a 100 series I have this one spare that is similar to the $185 one from Maquarrie Communications
Will sell it reasonably cheap

The spare wheel carrier mounts keep the antenna out of harms way,but mounting it on the bullbar will work considerably better.
Codan's own research has shown that having the antenna mounted close to bodywork diminishes the signal more than you might think.-Steve

I agree with SteveL. Had
mine mounted on the top of the bullbar and always excellent reception.
Moved it to the rear on a Kaymar wheel carrier and have poor/weak reception, even with the wheel carrier open. But it is less likely to sustain damage at the rear. Also believe there were some issues with traffic authorities about obstructing the drivers view.

I think they are no longer legal on the bull bar.

I mounted it there because as far as I know it is illegal in Queensland anyway to have anything thicker than 30mm mounted on the bullbar which intrudes into the drivers vision.
That is anywhere above the bonnet line.
I had
mine tested when I had the profile updated and was told that it was operating fine.
As long as the whip is above the roof line he said it doesnt make much difference

Graham,
Front mounting of HF antennas is still permitted here in QLD.
Have a look at pages 12 and 13 of
here under the heading Long Range Radio Antennas

A good read which sort of confirms what I said as it states that the maximum diameter is 70mm.
Any autotune aerial is more than that and therefore illegal.
Dont know the diameter of the Barret model but the Codan is over 100 mm and is 105 mm square at the bottom and only fits in side a 150 mm pipe..
I had to pack one up to post it and thats what it took to cover it.
In saying that there is heaps of them around and the fuzz dont seem to say much unless they decide to pick on you.

The top 600mm of a Codan 9350 is part of the radiating antenna and to say it makes not much difference is just wrong.I would read Codan's own research available at the Codan Outback Radio
yahoo group.

You may
well be right but I was given the info by the authorised Codan repairer here in
Brisbane. He tested it and said it was working to specs. Good, bad ,I dont know he's the expert.

Up here, just about every Police 4wd that I have seen has a 9350 mounted on the bullbar.......
Methinks it would be a case of the pot calling the kettle black or do as I say, not do as I do........

Emergency Vehicles are specifically exempted - apparently their
driver training enables them to see through them.

Does that also include the military?

I have the Kaymar one, I don't have pics of it yet but it's the standard one that clamps to the wheel carrier. Cost $165 from TJM and is purpose built for the job.
Works a treat.
Cheers

Far too expensive for what it is so made one that cant be removed and does the same job and is actually stiffer than the Kaymar one Total cost about $10
