I have had some issues with the accurancy of some mapping detail on my 2005 Natmap Raster 250K Maps(now renamed Natmap Digital)

Here is Geosciences statement on their website:

Accuracy and reliability
Maps
The 1:250 000 scale map images used in NATMAP Digital Maps 2008 are constructed from digital topographic data with a basic horizontal accuracy of approximately +/-120 metres. Therefore, the accuracy of positions reported by the software should approach that of the original paper map.

Topographic information included in the map images has been checked from multiple sources including satellite imagery. Most maps have not been field checked so some information may not be accurate or up to date, especially rapidly changing features such as telecommunication towers and homestead names.

Every effort has been made to make the map images a useful reference. If you discover errors or omissions on the map, please contact Geoscience Australia (mapfeedback@ga.gov.au) or send your annotated NATMAP Digital Maps 2008 printout to us showing the map error.

The reliability of individual map sheets can be found on the Map Reliability page

Here is what I have sent to Mapping Feedback via email:

Yes, I have read your disclaimer but to my mind some of your mapping is a very 'hit and miss' affair.

I have used your paper maps for 30 years before I started using Natmap Raster 250K 2003 digital mapping in conjunction with Oziexplorer. Later I installed the 2005 version.

Without going in to too much detail:

There are tracks marked in the Flinders Ranges which do not exist anymore

In the Great Sandy Desert average height of dunes in some places is shown as 5 metres whereas the dunes are 20-25 metres in height. The run of dune lengths is incorrect and obstacles are encountered which are not marked on the map.

On a recent trip north of Broken Hill I could not believe the discrepancies existing in your mapping whereby numerous tracks are marked as major routes when they do not exist any more. New roads have been in existence for some time and not shown on your maps.

This phenomena makes planning of journeys using your maps, hazardous to say the least. Although not life threatening, travelling in the Great Sandy Desert this year, as trip leader of an expedition, I was forced to make different plans and drive longer distances to get around obstacles using more precious fuel supplies as your maps are inaccurate!

Although your Mapping has its errors I stil intend to purchase the 2008 Version. Your pricelist, although showing an update of 10 June 2008 at the top of the page, does not include the 2008 price list!

We shall see what transpires!

Cheers

Gidday Willem,

I just purchased the 2008 set from the Map Shop in Adelaide for $99.00. There is only one version now (ie no premium version). I think that most of the mapsheets that I am familiar with are virtually the same in appearance as my 2003 set. I can't be sure of course without doing a physical check on each one. I was hoping for a clearer image on my PDA/Navigator, but I haven't been able to check that out because I am still trying to decide how to get the mosaic sections onto a storage card. The maps suffer from the compression required to reduce the digital file size. You need over 6GB of space to download the whole set, but you can run from the included DVDs if using a laptop with a DVD drive.

I do like the "layers" whereby you can change the view progressively to a satellite picture using a "transparency slider" . It is a neat trick on a PC. Unfortunately the resolution is not in the same class as Google Earth, but interesting none the less.

With regard to updates I think the site does say somewhere that the 2008 series uses maps from a 2006 survey.

My SD card for my PDA is only 4MB and I have Ozi, Natmap, Hema etc on it.

So this will mean a new SD card...bugga!

G'day Steve

LOL

Can you give me an approximate date for when you are travelling through as we have a busy month being here and there.

I'll be home next week and then again from 20 to 29 September. After tha we are in Alice till mid October and then Victoria from 23 October to mid November.

Staying home for the whole of summer and up to end of May...gotta save some money for next years Big Trip out west again :-)

Willem,
Found the same on the Innaminka trip. I have an older set of maps label as "Auslig 1:250,000" whichj I believe are the predecessors to the "Natmap" ones.

The "Content Reliability" statement of the Durham Downs map for example says; "Topographic information shown on this map is correct to 1969"

The Innaminka map says 1981.

As far as I know, no effort has been made to update these maps for a long while. They may have been re-published recently but their content can be very out of date.

Yes its disappointing when the Government Survey and Mapping mob can't get it right. THese days they can use satellite technology far superior to what we can access for their mapping updates, without leaving their desks.
