for some reason outlook has gone pear shaped as soon as I open it
quote" Cannot open your default e-mail folder. Errors have been detected in the file C:\Users\(goes on to list the full address). Quit Outlook and all email enabled applications and then use the inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe)to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information about the inbox repair tool see help

Great message from microsoft but whilst that error message is on the screen nothing else can be accessed (the help menu for example!!)..when I click on Ok to acknowledge the message the damn outlook program closes down..so it is a stalemate...cant use the help menu while error message is displayed................click OK and the program closes down!

any clever helpful members out there please?

thanks

Time to setup A Gmail account then you'll never loose your email again. Gmail can also access your POP server so you don't have to change your email address and you can store 7 gig up on Gmail.

Yes and if think big brother is not watching everything you do on the internet then you must be from another planet.
I don't have anything to hide so it makes no difference to me.

IMO there's a big difference between having nothing to hide and giving them carte blanche to do whatever they wish with your files....

Even your ISP or the Feds have access to your emails so if you don't have anything to hide, then you can use Gmail like many thousands of normal people around the world do. Negative commends usually come from companies who stand to loose from another companies market advantage.
Gmail is a fantastic program that will run on any operating system and from any computer. I use multiple computers and operating systems and can access my email from any computer without having my email spread over my many different systems. In Gmail you don't download the messages, you view it as Web page which saves on your allocated download limit. When ever I go traveling around OZ I use my mobile phone as a modem so the amount I download is important and that's way I use Gmail. My ISP is Bigpond and I paid for a spam filter and it was useless. In Gmail the spam filter is free and you can add to it whereas in Bigpond I was unable to do this.
I worked for a company that brought in random drug testing and only people who jumped up and down where the people who had or where taking drugs. I deal with Centrelink so I definately have nothing to hide.
I've been using Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Picasa for about two years now and love them all and they FREE.
As soon as Google Chrome is available in Linux I'll give that a go .

The Picasa 3 EULA

11. Content licence from you

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This licence is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

11.2 You agree that this licence includes a right for Google to make such Content available to other companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services.

11.3 You understand that Google, in performing the required technical steps to provide the Services to our users, may (a) transmit or distribute your Content over various public networks and in various media; and (b) make such changes to your Content as are necessary to conform and adapt that Content to the technical requirements of connecting networks, devices, services or media. You agree that this licence shall permit Google to take these actions.

Picasa is a great tool. I use it myself but I would NEVER use their Web Albums...
Would also NEVER use the online storage or allow an index of my computers hard drive to be stored by them (Google Desktop). You may give away your data if you wish. I prefer my privacy.

Maybe I'm bias because the Gmail server runs on the Google GFE/1.3 server, which is hosted on a Linux Operating System,
and not thank god not on a Windows server.

Bungarra,

You're email is kept in a file called outlook.pst. Use the Search function to locate it ( I'm too lazy because it's generally a lonnnnnng pathname ).

Copy the pst file to a folder somewhere else as a backup.

Run the utility scanpst.exe to check and repair the original outlook.pst file ( you can use the Search function to find scanpst.exe as well ).

It'll fix up most problems but you could lose emails, such is life.

Bungarra,

Write down the exact wording of the error message, then access the Microsoft Knowledge Base and type the error message in the search area.

You should find a list of relevant technical documents will be given, which you can download and/or print to help with resolution.

People who chuck Windows for an alternative operating solution are not clever, they just can't cope!!!

Bungarra,

I also had trouble with outlook mail, but more to do with attaching files to my E-mails. Contacted Microsoft by phone and was advised that for a small $80.00 fee I could be put onto a technician to find the problem. No thank you.

Very interested in the replies about problems with this service/program. Will try some of the suggestions outlined to see if they can fix or help with my problems.

Tks

Gunna Do.......you might beinterested in the following experience I had on my laptop the other day...(not the same computer that had this recently fixed problem)

Purchased new laptop and Microsoft Office came with it preloaded as OEM. I ran this for the 60 day trial and when I went to purchase on line the price was a bloody joke...very expensive . I deleted the Microsoft Office Program by un installing and all appeared to have vanished........I then purchased the same product in Harvey Norman for about half the price and loaded this onto it the computer.

Guess what happpened?..the old outlook emails and the email accounts (from the deleted trial version) all came on automatically into the "new" Outlook. I never lost a damn thing in Outlook despite having deleted it all (or so I thought)...

Note that there was not a problem with the Outlook I deleted (as I said different computer to the issue I have just resolved thanks to Al) ...but maybe if it is not a saved data issue that is causing you a problem then maybe by uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook the data may not be lost and the issue might be resolved?

I am sure someone on here can tell you which data files to save beforehand just in case

cheers

If you are sick of Microsoft go to the Mozilla website and download their browser "Firefox" and their email "Thunderbird" - both easy to use and i have found them very stable.

While I agree that Thunderbird and Firefox are great to use, Transferring old files/address books with Thunderbird can be a real problem if you change computers or have a crash.

This is a bit techie, but that is what I do for a living

Few things that might help people. OUtlook stores the .pst file in the following folder (which is hidden on most machines)

C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Each user can have a different outlook file or you are able to point them at the same one by going to Control Panel > Mail >Data Files and finding the one central .pst file you want to use for your email on different accounts. This is useful if you all have one email address but like Windows setup in different ways when you login (for a family say).

Uninstalling MS Office programs does not get rid of any of your settings including the .pst files. As mentioned above sometimes you can uninstall and reinstall for some problems. But often the errors have the solution in them. If you read the error carefully it will often tell you what to do.

If it does not then the best way to search for a solution is using google, but go to advanced and select Microsoft.com as the domain and this will search and give you the KB articles related to the the problem. If the first search does not come up with a solution then just try rephrasing the issue.

The other tip I have is to keep the size of your email file low. Use the Archive feature in Outlook to transfer older emails to another .pst file as an archive. You can still access the emails but it keeps the main one trim and cust down on issues and improves speed.

And finally keep it up to date. Ensure that you are doing "Microsoft Updates" not just "Windows Updates". Click the Start > All Programs and at the top of the first column you will see Windows Update and possible Microsoft Update. Ensure that you have scheduled Microsoft Update to run and do its updates regularly. If you don't have it then goto Windows Update - when the pages opens goto the menu link on the page that says Microsoft update and then follow the instructions. The difference between the two is that Windows just updates Windows and Microsoft updates Windows and all the Microsoft programs (including outlook and office).

Hope that helps a few people.

The forum system dropped some of the info in the link to the directory. The info is:

C:\Documents and Settings\[your user account]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

You can type this into the address bar of the WIndows Explorer to find it (or do a search as previously mentioned).
