Was told that I must use an oil that is suited for LPG ??? What would that matter ?? I know the difference between diesel and petrol oil (higher detergent etc). I have 2 new by 5 litres containers of magnatec that I usually use in the petrol prado and I am going to use that as Im not going to waste it but was wondering for future oil changes. I have been down the spare parts
shop (supercheap) and had a look around at the different oils and some do state on there LPG compatible along with multivalve etc but none strickly dedicated to LPG. Gas bloke said it doesnt matter which oil as long as good quality but thought I better check the huge knowledge that is available on this site. Regards Steve M

Stephen
I am not sure what the answer is but this question does remind me of a discussion we had during a LPG installation and licence course that I did at TAFE in 1988. I have only worked on my own gas cars ever since so I can't remember all the details.
We were told LPG forms some kind of nitrates, or something like that, in the oil and they can eat away certain parts. Cooper/lead bearings were one of them and the teacher had a few badly corroded ones from a Holden to show us. Other bearings like aluminium/tin were not affected.
That could possibly be one of the reasons why oil companies make oil specifically for gas cars. I have always used it and have never thought about using anything else.
You may get some answers here but I would also be inclined to ring or email a couple of oil companies and ask them.

The additives in LPG oil are designed to work with the "drier" LPG environment. The Castrol site states that Magnatec is suitable for LPG engines so should have no problems.

And, as Brian says, they are formulated to prevent the formation of nitrates, according to Penrite.

Hi John, was just on their website but couldnt find anything about magnatec saying anything about LPG. They do have one called Maxigas so I rang them up and they told me that is only available in large drums and are used in the cabs. He started talking about ash contents etc (over my head) so was really none the wiser. I rang the gas bloke back and he said there shouldnt be any issues with using magnatec but want to be sure I wont do any long term damage. He did say that Synthetic oil is what he recomends and uses himself so maybe thats the way to go. He just said make sure I use the correct grade etc for the prado ??? Thankyou for that. Regards Steve M

It's on their website....
Go to
Castrol Magnatec and you'll see a box saying "Which cars should use Castrol Magnatec". Click on the box and the third point says "Suitable for petrol, diesel,LPG, CNG......" etc, etc. Bloody p!ss poor when they don't know their own product.
Personally I use Penrite HPR Gas in the Statesman and Mobile 1 in the Paj.

Rob on the reply below has mentioned the Penrite oil as
well. Yep the bloke had no idea and even when I told him you had read it on the site he still couldnt lead me to the correct page like you have just done. What grade is the Penrite ?? Same as magnatec ?? Got me wondering now wether I should change it over tomorrow for the Penrite (if they allow me). I suppose as mentioned above unless Im going to keep it for another ten years (not going to happen) then any good quality oil will do. Whats your thoughts on this ?? Regards Steve M

Penrite do 2 LPG oils. HPR GAS (20W 60) and HPR GAS 10 (10W 50) which is a semi synthetic. That's the one I use in the Statesman.
Penrite

I have used Penrite oils in all of the performance cars i've owned as i really think they make a great product. My dual fuel 80 series is running Penrite HPR GAS and its holding up really
well.
Personally, if your Magnatec is gas suitable, then i'd use it first. Then maybe look at penrite as another alternative.

I my self just used ordinary oil - this was in a Toyota Hiace van that i would do about 200 KM of city driving in a day 5 days a week ( work van fully loaded with
tools and carrying some 200+ kg machinery at times )
had that van for about 4 years with no ill effect and ONLY ever ran on LPG - maybe done 100 Km on petrol out of 20 000KM lpg -- so unless you plan to keep the car for 10 + year there is no point .....

Thanks for that Ozboc. I just read the label again must be going bloody blind. It has it on the back label saying LPG compatible so after reading that and you having no issues I will stick with it. Wont have it for the next 10 years. Im still trying to make my mind up wether to spend the $$$$ on a locker. I might be getting hold of my cousins rodeo next year (maybe). The wifes not keen on me spending on another vehicle and she quit likes the prado specially being auto where as the rodeo is manual. Thanks again for the info appreciated. Regards Steve M

Stephen,
I have always used Penrite HPR30 in my 80 series even prior to converting it to LPG 10 years ago. My thinking is if you are happy with the magnatec stick to it. Penrite do make a dedicated LPG oil but I have always stuck with the HPR30 as I alternate between ULP / LPG and never run solely on LPG.
