Hi All,
My brother has just bought a '95 petrol 80 series which he wants to put on gas. Can anyone give advice on which is the best system. Vacuum or injection. Have tried to look up on internet but can only get hi-tech answers. Thanks in advance.
Sally.

Sally,
I have a 95 80 series and have the vacuum system. Works very
well. Make sure he installs a flashlube system and uses colder plugs NGK BKR6E.
One thing I can reccomend as
well is that he always starts on petrol until warm then changes to LPG and do the reverse at end of day.
I converted
mine at 70k and it is now on 280k without a problem.
Get 4-5km per ltre round town on LPG and about 6-7 on the highway. It's a good thing.

The best system is injected by far but you'd have to check if a kit is available for that model.

The injection system is the best from what I have heard but will cost you alot more to buy and install. I have vapour system on
mine (prado) couldnt justify the extra 1 1/2 to 2g's. If I was going to keep it for ten years then maybe. Some vehicles can only be fitted with the new injection system like the current model v6 petrol prados and new hilux's as they have plastic inlet manifold so wouldnt handle the extra heat by the gas vapour system. I had my'n done by Gas-N-Go at Prestons NSW by Greg. Great job and so far no issues. Very professional and good follow up. Had spoke to others that had theirs done by him and no bad reports. Just becareful as there are alot of bodgy fitters at the moment trying to cash in on the huge amount of people wanting to go LPG. Regards Steve M

I you go for a vapour system IMPCO is probably the best brand
after all the reasearch did.
And is what i have fitted, and has been trouble free for 3 years so far.
As for injection system i can comment on any.

I've recently bought a 1993 80 series with 255000km on the clock. I had it put on LPG soon after I bought it by New Gas at Taren Point, near Cronulla for $2800. I had a few minor issues with the install but it was soon sorted easily. The gas is great minimal power loss. I get about 400km per
tank around town and about 500km on the highway fully loaded.

I have an 80 series which i recently put on gas injection through Premier Auto Centre in Mt Druit,
Sydney (one of the largest gas instalklers in NSW who have the contracts to do gas conversions for most new car dealrships).
It is fantastic to say the least. Perfectly accurate mixtures in all conditions and fuel economy which is absolutely consistent and never ever needs tuning to try to get the fuel savings the system was fitted for...
I start her up and drive... at 50 deg C coolant temp, the computer automatically switches to gas and apart from a dashlight changing colour you would never know.
100% reliable, always 100% fuel efficient and in tune, 1--% power and torque and will never backfire and damage engine components like MAF sensor.
If you are considering keeping your 80 series for a few years and can outlay $2,600, (incl govt rebate as is $4,600) then i can not recommend gas injection highly enough.
However if you would scrap an electronically controlled fuel-injection system for an archaic primitive carbie style gas system which will always need tuning, never give perfect economy or power and will cough and splutter and possibly cause engine damage then i guess with the govt rbate you can inflict that on your cruiser for 500 bucks.

Sorry, that was a bit harsh. A vacuum system for $500 is a really cheap way of halving your running costs and pumping out alot less harmful emmissions. But if an extra $2k is within budget, id recommend it for reasons above.
Cheers!
