Gday there.
Travelling from down south to Charters Towers and was wondering if anyone had a view on the best route to take on the blacktop - either the Newell or
Mitchell Highways, and any hints on decent caravan parks or
places to stay along the way. (Will be going off the blacktop on the way home).
Many Thanks

Hi we went from
Emerald to Charters towers last year , it is a single lane bitumen road up thru
Clermont, not bad just get off for the trucks .
Cheers Des.

I'd be coming up the Newell Hwy to
Goondiwindi and then go staright ahead up through
Miles to Banana then hook a left through Moura (great
rest area for overnight on the Dawson River just past Moura) up to
Emerald then
Clermont and up to Charters.
The road from
Clermont to Charters is mostly twin lane. There is still a bit of single lane up near Charters.

G'day Robbbbo
We set oiut to
Cooktown last year and went through Moree,
St George,
Emerald (as per other response 'always give way to trucks' as much of the bitumen is narrow and often dops off sharply when you leave the bitumen.
Specific
places we camped at were
Surat (free
campsite - donation to Fishing Club) small tow with a couple of nice little
general store shops - free hot showers at local sports ground, people there were very nice.
Injune to
camp is $6 per day or three days for $12, we camped in the open area away from the caravan section as one lady was really ripping into her other half as she guided into the space next to ours - we opted out then and there for the open spaces and took a walk up each day for the showers. That's not far from
Surat but we wanted to check out nearby NP's. Outback Queensland people were all very nice.
Capella (David & Hodie) was an excellent place to stop for a couple of days, not much in the immediate area and past
Emerald (booked out) a bit but again friendly hosts.

Up thru Moree, Mungindi,
St George,
Roma (rude buggers),
injune,
springsure,
emerald is the fastest and shortest route.
You can
free camp 1km north of
Springsure on the way to
Emerald. There is also a caravan
park behind the BP on the southern side of town (fee) and
camping at the showground near the hospital (fee) which is the quietest and furtherst avay from the hwy.

Dave
