Hi everyone! Going to pass through
Innamincka, so thought it might be a good idea to cover what is in the area. Anyone been to
Coongie Lake recently? Worth checking out or should we give it a miss?

Forgot to ask, but what is the road like from
Innamincka out towards the Lake?
Cheers for replies!

We spent 3 nights out there in early July. Great for birdlife. A wonderfull spot. Road is no better or worse than other roads in that area. Took us about 2 hours to get to the lakes, but we did make a few stops on the way.

Well worth it, very peaceful. Spent two days there a fortnight ago. Road is a bit corrugated but that’s nothing unusual for the area. It rained overnight before we came back and the road was bit chopped from vehicles going through the mud however graders were working near it so should hopefully be ok now.
Air down your tyres to around 16psi and take the marked 4WD track to the right as you come in. This will lead you down to various
camping sites on the edge of the lake. The other
camping spot a bit further down near the visitors day area is not as secluded. Allow at least 2 to 2.5hrs to get out there. A pass is issued at the
Innamincka Trading post for your vehicle plus
camping fees.
Enjoy

One of the most beautiful spots on earth. If you can get out there, get out there. We didn't
camp there, but next time I will for sure. Loved it, and I'm not even a bird watcher (of the feathered kind).

Now I'm convinced...yeh we have 13 days - heading to
Birdsville- do the
Birdsville Track - see the
Simpson Desert (just look at, not cross) see Lake Eyre then down to
Flinders Ranges and head back to
Sydney. Now we are adding Coongie Lakes for sure. Guess we have to draw the line now. thanks mate!

Cheers guys ! Sounds good enough to stop by and if there are birds we will definitely call in at Coongie Lakes. Thanks for advice regarding
camping, letting off tyres and also on where to obtain permits. This is a first for us so any advice is welcome.
REGARDS

Guys
When you get onto that marked 4wd track that goes by the lake, there is a lovely
camp spot that is hidden from view by trees, as you traverse down the one and only fairly steep sand
hill, the turn into this spot is right at the bottom of the grade....

I spent a couple of nights there in July, plenty of
water there back then.
If going to South end Lake Eyre stay at Mulroonina
Water Hole. A Magical spot compared with the desolation of Lake Eyre.

Coongie Lake is a truly wonderful place and there are plenty of private
camping spots near the lake. My only gripe is that
camp fires are not allowed but I imagine that this is so because campers will not bring firewood with them and resort to destroying the Lake surrounds.

L&S,
I LIKED coongie and would stay if time permits. It is able to be done in a day from Innaminka if you choose to do it that way also. Birdlife around Inaminka won't dissapoint so if you don't stay at the lake you still won't miss out in that department.
Further on I would advise a stopover at Clayton's wetlands, 3/4 down the B/ville track. All advise I received was to stay at Mungerannie and while this was fine, Claytons was sooooooo much better in my opinion. Fill the big open spa up with hot
water and crack open a few tinnies......it doesn't get any better in my opinion. The wetlands (a little way away from
camp area) filled with birds the night we stopped there, but morning was a blurr (note "crack open a few tinnies" hehehehe) so don't know about birdlife in the morning.
Farina also
well worth a good look around, good camps here too but I didn't stay here.
Travel safe and enjoy what time you can out there.
Regards, Trevor.
