Hi there Greendog, depends if you want it to turn off with the key, or can keep it on without having the key in the ignition. Myn is hooked up so it turns off with the key. I just linked into the cigy lighter on mine as it turns of with the key. The wiring kit that comes with your new radio should have an inline fuse which you still use even thou the cigy has its own fuse as well. Just connect the earth wire to some thing close by that will give you a good earth. You dont have to run the positive wire for the radio all the way to the battery if you want to have it on without the key. Just pick up a wire from under dash that has permanant power. Straight to the battery via the in line fuse that should come with the radio. Very simple project.

NORM

thats the simplest way but its a pain in the ar$e if you leave the radio on & it flattens the old battery. as Stephen said, the turn off key/radio is less of a hassle.

Different strokes I guess.

I find it a pain having to have the key in the ignition and on accessories to use the radio.

Also, with the radio connected to the aux battery, I think I would need to leave it on for a VERY long time for it to flatten the battery (measured in days, I suspect).

I've wired this way for several years in different vehicles and always been happy.

As I said - different strokes.

Spot on Norm,

No need to have the the UHF connected via the ignition.
I have accidently left mine on overnight without any noticable impact to the battery capacity.
Power is really only consumed when transmitting, not recieving.
Receive power is minimal and you are only driving a small speaker.

Bill.

G,day Greendog

Mine is hooked up to permanent power, that way you don't have to have your keys on you just to use the radio. mine usually stays on the whole weekend as I forget to turn it off when I get back to camp. I've never had a flat battery

I've been reading your posts about the insurance co. it's good to see everything is working out

Cheers Luke
