Hi everyone

I have a 2004 GU 3Ltr ITD Patrol with a noise somewhere near the fan, sounds like a ssshhhhh and a ratlle, am thinking fan belt tensioner, Nissan want $179 ex Mel, Repco want $77 ex Sydney. If its not the tensioner what else could it be, it quietens down at 100km/ph?
Have changed tensioner before on Holdens (easy) any tips for the Patrol?

Cheers Rob

Best get onto patrol 4x4.com, they will be a great help, make sure there are no pulleys falling off.

Agreed, further to that there is a post on there (patrol4x4) that gives instructions on how to replace the bearing in the tensioner pulley (if that is what the problem is) for a lot less than the cost for new assembly. It gives part numbers for the bearing and detailed instructions, seems fairly straight forward and very inexpensive.

I've heard that you can fit a Holden 3.8L tensioner to them. Cost is under $30 apparently. But I am just going on hearsay as I've not done it myself.

Hi Rob,
It could be the fan/serpentine belt, I have the same Patrol as you and recently replaced mine due to noises after a session in a mud hole.
The first one I used was non gen but that was noisy to...had to use a genuine belt to shut it up.
Made more noises than I thought it could, swore the alternator was running a bearing but it wasnt.
Maybe this could help you.
regards Alan

I agree with this. The belt can make some very bearing sounding noises and quite loud. Check that out first, you never know! Cheers Tony

Before spending any money ,you should disconnect all the belts and see if the noise is still there.

Gday,
Try spraying your idler pulley with WD40 and see if it stops for a while.
If it needs replaceing, take the bearing int CBC bearings and get them to match it. It will cost about $20 a bearing instead of the $100 odd Nissan will charge.

Cheers

Hi guys

Thanks for all the input, I got a second opinion on the noise from the boys at JC Diesel at Narellan NSW, who confirmed this is a common problem. I went to Repco who supplied me with a new pulley and bearing for $77 which took me about 20 minutes to remove including mark out the fan belt setup as it could be confusing. I then took the complete unit back to JC Diesel who used a special tool to remove and re-fitted the new pulley and would not accept any money. Thats old fashioned service and although the business has been sold, the new owner has similar service ethics like old Dick who was the previous owner. Back home and another 20 minutes I had it all together and running. Again thanks for all your help,

Cheers Rob
