I/we have decided to extend our trip slightly just up to Lake Eyre.
Is Lake Eyre worth seeing, even if it's empty?? I can see from my map that there are 2
camp spots.
Level Post bay (which is where we were thinking of
camping) and another place that doesnt seem to have a name. Once again any info would be great.
Thanks to everyone who has helped with my endless questions about planning this trip...it's slowly starting to come together. Would truely be lost without this site.

Hi Hayley & Demc,
I am a past employee of
Muloorina Station and want to suggest to you you stay at Muloorina on the bank of the Frome River. It has
water in it from the
homestead bore with bird life, station stock watering from it all the time. There is bird life there all year round.
The
camping fee is a donation to the RFDS and is only $4-00 a night I think. From there you can travel to view Lake Eyre south and north.
To get
Muloorina Station you need to go to
Marree then to
homestead camping area, it's signed all the way to Lake Eyre.
Enjoy you visit to the lake. Cheers P&J

We attempted to go to Level Post at the end of June but the road was closed from the Muloorina
campsite due to
water. I don't imagine this is a problem at the moment but there was no notice back on the track or at
Marree so we drove in half way.
We had a break at the Muloorina
campsite before returning and it looked like an excellent
camp. Even had
toilets etc and as stated PandJ there was plenty of birlife on the
waterhole.

Muloorina
waterhole is a gem. Because you have to back track there are not many visitors.
If you do go there make sure you have a look at the channel which feeds the
waterhole. Take fire wood in with you before you enter the National
Park.
Great spot.
Cheers

Muloorina
waterhole is a top spot.
Set up
camp, then do the trip to the lake.
Bird life is fantastic!
BBQ's and toitets.

In 2003 this would have been a photo of our
campsite. Went there before the fun police fenced it off.

Hi if desolation sand and mirages are for you go to
Level Post Bay for a look I could not tell if it was mirage or
water that I could see. The other access is at Halligan /
ABC bay, a moonscape, worth a look as
well, take note of the
memorial to the German tourist that perished after they bogged trying to drive out onto the lake.
If you want to
camp in a magical spot,
camp at Mulroorina
water hole
When I pass that way again I will be taking time out to drive out to
camp there again.
Desert Parks Pass required.
Check my profile, the photo of the Troopy in the sand is close to Lake Helen, near
Level Post Bay, taken the day after a sand storm.

Coward Springs is a
nice camp ground, commercially run. and very popular. Mulroorina is a self registration
camp site run by Desert Parks, the usual $4.80 per person per night if I remember rightly, lots of room.

Not being one for crowds and lots of people my preference would be Muroorina, worth the extra distance travel, even if it means backtracking, if going to have a look at South Eyre you pass by anyway. Both
places have
toilets, don't remember about showers,
Coward Springs has fire
places, not sure about the wood supply, plenty of old sleepers from the Ghan near the track anyway.
Coward Springs is a
camp ground with nice shelter and history, Muroorina is basically a
Bush Camp with
Toilets and birds.
The choice is yours I suppose and depends on your priorities I guess. I can recommend both.

Spell check!! should be Mulroorina, I might also add that you should bring your own wood.
