We hope to be driving from Quilpie to Windorah and onwards on the Diamantina Developmental rd in mid October. It appears that this section of the road has disappeared as there are no road conditions for it recorded anywhere. It was there last year...can any one help with information. So far it seems the only way is via Adavale to Retreat and then down to Windorah......an extra 200 ks or so? Any other infor regarding current outback Qld conditions would be muchly appreciated. Cheers....Lynda

Quilpie to Windorah is all bitumen. Drove it about a month ago. Didn't see anything that would warrant a road condition report.

I agree. But today it is not showing up on any road condition report including ExploreOz...it is odd....has it rained?

Yeh, the road from Quilpie to Windorah is a 2 lane bitumen road and shows it that way on the maps. Not sure why you'd need a condition report?

We are driving from Sydney to Booraloola in 7 days...leave Friday must be there by Friday...so working out the most suitable drive with good camp sites on the way. using an online distance calculator which only gives a route from Quilpie to Windorah via Adavale then up past Welford National Park then back to Windorah.....as if the road from Quilpie to Windorah has vanished. Has got me wondering as the road from Thargomindah to Quilpie is currently closed.
Thanks for your input

Chookcharmer - what I have found with the on line distance calculators they send you in funny directions some times. Obtain a good road map of NSW and QLD . I have travelled from Quilpie to Windorah a number of times but yet to go to Adavale. A lot of people camp of the Barcoo river just out of Windorah

Thanks A J, yes have the maps, I was just being lazy. DId a lot of the area last year on mainly off road tracks...had more time. I'm trying to work out a route so that we have no more than 7 hours a day driving....I'll get there eventually. My problem is I want to see and stop at all the great places on the way.
Cheers

Well Lynda if you want to see some of the better country between Quilpie and Windorah, head from Quilpie staight across to Eromanga. The intersection is 36k. W of Quilpie.
From Eromanga (fill up with the cheap fuel at the refinary there, and have a beer with Scot or Di at the pub) then north about 55k. to the Kyabra waterholes.
Here you will find a beautiful camp spot, fishing and a plethora of bird life.
Continue on and you come back onto the Windorah road at Thylungra, birthplace of the Kings in Grass Castles.
So many people miss out on these locations and the history. Call at the Quilpie information centre where you will get some good info. All the roads out there are in top condition thanks to the Quilpie Shire. They cover an enormous area, but always on the job!

Thank you furph, going to the Kyabra waterhole has been on my list...just trying to figure out how/when. We went that same way last year having camped at Noccundra then up to Windorah on our way to the Diamantina NP but we didn't see the waterhole. There is so much too see. I think we'll see a bit more on the return trip which should be a bit more leisurely. Thanks again...the line distance calculator etc and I must have been glitching out.....

Ooops, sorry Lynda, I didn't read you post carefully enough.
You say you are travelling Sydney to Boroloola in 7 days, a distance of about 3500km. (via Quilpie)
That is roughly 500km./day, and at 7hrs./day driving means you have average 70kph.
Well, I have to say you wont have any time to look at those spots I mentioned, and at that speed in that country I dont think I would really like to be a passenger with you either.
There are hundreds of km. of unfenced road with cattle often crossing. You will see scores of road kill carcases, all of which caused damage to someones vehicle.
I wish you a safe trip.

Ah yes furph....now you are getting my problem........I'm trying to find the shortest way to get there...having done it last year and most of it the year before that...I'm not too worried about spending time at camp spots on the way up. I feel the formed roads would be best but people drive like maniacs on them..so I'm thinking a bit more slowly on the dirt, less traffic too...but maybe the formed all the way to the Isa and then over the border to Ranken rd, Lorne creek, cape crawford and Borroloola. For some reason I just can't seem to get a comfortable route . Wish this type of thing didn't take so long to work out.
cheers

Remember to stop at Toompine for a break (before you get to Quilpie)
