I beg anyone out there to help me. i have posted here before but had no reply. I have a 100 series landcruiser and it is on LPG/unleaded. The car goes into limp mode for no good reason. I switch the car off and on again and it is fine again. it was happening once a week and over the last year has become every drive. I had taken it to toyota and they offered no help. They said because the windshield has been changed it is probably
water on the wiring. I checked the car and the windscrean does not leak. 100% sure. The car was put on toyotas computer and it did not have a fault code. I even had it on the computer while it was on limp mode with still no code. I tried a different computer and the only thing they found was a shocker sensor error. Not related they said. infact i dont know why you would need one. I realy have reached the end of my teather and i'm contemplating wrecking the car. Someone said O2 Sensor but i dont beleive there is one. Another person said chage the CPU of the car but that an extreem measure if not sure. Someone also said maybe the airbox has a crack in it but is still cant see how an intake air box could cause this when you can run it with the lid open. It is on gas and has backfired before. i thought it was the air flow meater but i checked that and found it to be woring. Please please please help me. I cant stand it any longer GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Whilst acknowledging the vast experience of the learned technos who lurk here, have you tried
http://www.lcool.org - there is a concentration of experience there from a large group of Toyo owners ! I joined and posted a couple of issues - paid off for me already - even contributed on a minor issue or two - and there is a lot of posts to read going back a fair way.

Landcruiser from Hell
My suggestion is you post your above problem across on the Landcruiser site LCOOL. Just Google LCOOL and you will locate site
lot of Landcruiser Gurus on that site who may be able to identify your problem.

Start with the basics that most wont pick up like check all your vacuum lines and hoses and any associated clamps as even the slightest pin hole or vacuum leak can cause an engine to go to limp mode in some vehicles. Also check and redo all your earths.
These things will cost you nothing but a little time and eliminate one other possibility
Hope this helps

Some thing similar happened to my Son's 100 series LC, Auto,
the Thermostat was playing up, and the Engine Management
System didnt indicate any problem, even the Temp Guage showed
normal, kept on loosing power, intermittently, a Tow Truck Driver
suggested to check the Thermostat, he replaced the Thermostat and fixed the problem.

G'day pony boy,
knew a bloke who was having similar probs with his auto petrol 100 stuck in limp mode. he had the gearbox rebuilt but still had problems, from memory it was a sensor on the gearbox (not exactly sure wich one) it was around the $300 dollar mark.
so i would be having a look into that.

Hi,
Maybe a dumb question but have you taken it to a gas specialists/installer?
If you have an injection style system then it will have its own computer which maybe the problem.
If it is backfiring then the engine may need to be re-mapped to the gas computer.
Easily done by a reputable installer of LPG systems.
I have LPG/unleaded and thankfully in 50,000 km I have not had one problem.
Regards
CraigB

the car has been sent to a gas specialist. They said ther is no gas computer and no oxygen sensor on the 6 cylinder type 100 series landcruisers. The backfire has split the air box. but that is before the airflow meter so cant be that

The car does have an o2 sensor Pony boy - even though you don't say wether its the six or v8. (The V8 should have 3)
Your report reads like you are frustrated , but its just a mechanical fault and it responds to logical deduction and is fixable.
First step is to determine if it happens on petrol/Lpg or both.

i dont think the 6 has an oxygen sensor on the 100 series. i think the 80 series did and the v8 100 series. could be worng but cant see one there. the problem happens on gas nad petrol.

Not sure but dont cruisers have a sensor in the sump and if the oil level is down it will go into limp mode and wont let the engine rev up over a certain rpm ?? Just a thought. regards Steve

I had very similar problem with my SS Commodore, was in the garage for a month on all sorts of computers and gadgets, new parts put here and there to try and find the faut. It had them stumped, until the mechanic from over the road come wandering in and said check the IAC valve (Idle air control). So we checked over this and it was fine, but when dismantling the intake manifold we noticed air had been getting in past a gasket. Wacked some gasket glue on and put it all, back together and it ran sweet from that day on. You pretty much have to eliminate one thing at a time with these modern cars, really are more trouble then there worth. I would go over all your oxygen sensors and things like that and see what you can find. Will be something very minor i bet.

I am pretty sure it was before the air flow meter, but i could be wrong. I cant really remember to be honest. But i am leaning towards before.

if your cruiser is fuel injected one of the probs could be when you are on gas . the gas system has to cut the injectors or fuel pump to stop fuel getting in whileon gas . now( it realy depends on what sort of system you have) when you switch to gas the gas system has to trick the vehicles ecu into thinking it is still running on fuel so it does not triger a code. on certain vehicles this fails to do so , thus the vehicle will go into limp mode as the ecu thinks there is an issue with the fuel system .
does your problem happen on petrol and gas ?

problem happens on petrol and GAS. if it is what your suggesting then wouldnt it happen everytime it switched to gas not after you drive it for a while? the gas system is not injected and has a mixer type setup. but again the issue happens on Gas and petrol

Pony boy
I have just been told about a LC 100 that had similar problem and it was traced to the wire loom under the box with all the relay's.
On the passenger side above the left front guard. The fault can only be found when vehicle will not start.
The owner was ready to wreck the vehicle. My son who does gas and vehicle servicing persevered and finally found the problem.
