On a recent trip to WA I had great difficulty in accessing Radtel's
Perth Base. I once got a feeble selcall return on 8 mhz. I had no such trouble with the VKS base at
Perth.
Has any one else had this problem?

Mate,
I was up around Alice,
Birdsville etc and had no problems raising
Perth.
Even get them some days from
Sydney.
Cheers

Can you recall time of day and distance involved at the time ?

Hi Darian,
I have had no problems getting into Radtel's Bases elsewhere. Infact
Derby and CAB bases were good.
The time of day was usually mid morning and late afternoon. I have to say checking call back with VKS
Perth operated as I would expect.
After trying the Radtel
Perth base regularly over 3 weeks (90-3000kms) it would appear to me to be some what inadequate.
However I take note of the reply that at least one other user has found it OK. I also take note of the other reply about antenna orientation. If the antenna points Northeast it may not be a great signal due north.
Thanks

It depends on the type of aerial each base is running.
One might favour close-in signals and one may favour more distant signals.

I did use Radtel a few years back - the service worked quite
well overall - HF is of course quite variable in performance due to a number of factors, including the actual location of the base hardware - with these networks though, you can pretty
well tap in via one base or another at any time. Generally, VKS737 base operators report HF conditions currently as being quite 'long' - when I used Radtel from central and southern Oz, I was a lot better off using Charters, middle of the day, on those higher frequency numbers. The airwaves were much cleaner in the middle of the day (at that time, I found asian sourced interference on Radtel's frequencies early and late - other networks suffered too of course - propogation for that 'interference' at noon was poor though, so unheard), and my reach to Radtel was good on those higher frequencies - Charters being further away was a whole lot better than the Alice at that time. Hmmm - maybe you were a bit close, for these times, for Radtel
Perth ?
